Hello all! It’s been a little while since I have had anything meaningful to update you on. After polishing and coating the Camaro I have really fallen down the detailing rabbit hole. I decided that it was the GTI’s turn to get some attention, so I have been working on a “restoration” more or less. It had been getting kinda long in the tooth over the years and I have finally had some time to get it right again. Plus the car is just about to hit 100k so it only seemed right.
I did the exterior first with a full decontamination and then two step cut/polish. I compounded with Jescar Correction compound and Meguiars Microfiber cutting pads. Then I followed up with Sonax Perfect Finish on a Rupes Yellow foam pad. I had to do a couple passes in a few places with the compound because the paint was a bit rough, but overall I think I achieved easily an 80% or better correction. The paint is super clear now. Even my mom noticed that there was some more metal flake she had never noticed before! For the glass I used Sonax Cutmax with the same MF cutting pads.
For anyone wondering the Milwaukee 5” random orbital machine is totally worth the coin!! It is almost impossible to lean on it hard enough to make it stall. I also used the Flex PXE-80 for the tighter areas. Cordless is the way..
Once the polishing was done I coated it with the usual Gyeon Pure Evo. Overall I am super pleased with how it turned out. It looks better than I have ever seen it during my ownership.
I also did some rock chip repair with the Dr. Colorchip kit in between polishing steps. The front end of the car had gotten really bad from winters in the Northeast and getting thrashed regularly on I-95 where it is impossible to maintain a safe following distance. I was apprehensive about the kit at first but, with some time and patience the result was so much better than I expected. The color match is so good you cannot see the chips unless you look at them just right. I’d say it went from a 30’ car to a 10’ car easy.
All the ones that are left are small chips in the clear coat. Not much you can do about those unfortunately.
Next up was the interior because the seats had gotten really filthy from years of use. Anyone with the cloth plaid seats can attest I am sure! I used P&S Spot and Stain remover followed by P&S Carpet Bomber. Brushed in and then removed with an extractor. I was really pleased with this results as well. It made the seats look new again.
I used this same technique for the rest of the seats and the carpet inside the vehicle. It looks great IMO.
Finally and I guess most importantly should be the service. For 100k I am doing the normal oil/filter change, plug swap, cabin filter, and tire rotation. I am also considering another trans fluid change. I did it last around 65k and replaced with Motul Gear 300 75W-90. Do you think I should do it again? Would it be worth taking it to an indy shop and having them check the timing chain tensioner location? (I don't have VCDS) Anything else you guys can think of to do at 100k?
As always thanks for reading!
