Thanks for the excellent information. I'm heading to the dealer momentarily.

Here's a shot of the mis-located seal on my car at the driver door/fender seam:
GTI LF fender-1.jpg

Photo doesn't show it terribly well, but the plastic seal has moved to the center of the seam. Pushing it back in place doesn't work- it won't stay.

And no, that's not a scratch on my door- just dirt.

Just back from the local dealer. They're ordering a replacement liner- should be there in a day or so. They will have the door edge touched-up by brush- they definitely want to avoid spraying the door.

OP, I really appreciate the heads-up! Thanks!

2018 GTI: My passenger door liner is not yet rubbing, but clearly it is not seated in place. I spend half an hour trying to re-seat the liner towards the front of the car to provide more clearance. No luck. Will need to have dealer order and repair.

Driver side by comparison has more clearance.

My early '15 model GTI doesn't have the seal.
The door does come surprisingly close to the fender when opening and closing - tight gap tolerances will do that I suppose - but doesn't rub.
I thank the OP for the tip tough.

From the comments so far, it appears that this liner was added in the 2017 MY, as 2016 and older models do not seem to have it, but my 2017 and others' 2017s and 2018s have it.

Why would VW add this? What functionality does it add other than aesthetic? (Some people don't even realize it is there).

It looks so cheap without it. Now I make sure nobody is looking when I open my door.

My car is a 2018 Golf confortline (canada) 2500kms and the paint on the hood is missing and the thickness is not enough, 0.5 vs 2.5 normally
All over the hood stones chips and primer is visible.

No still waiting news from my dealer, im nervous about resale value after that but my dealer told me its not an accident so the car will not loose in value..im septic

They are wrong. At least here in the US. If a buyer has a discerning eye....paint work can be seen a mile away. I would accept nothing less than a new car. It would be too much for me to swallow. I found a few paint defects on my 2018, but 99% of people would not see them. I got the dealer to cover the cost to cut/buff out the scratches they put in the car when removing shipping materials.

My 2 cents.
