Possible journey back to stock - Fun things happened today.

I have been driving the GTI all weekend, I just got the car out of storage a few weeks ago and have been driving it on nice days. Yesterday and today I got to open it up a bit and admittedly the car did seem "slow" but that could be my mind playing tricks on me.

So far I really haven't had any driving issues, MPG is in normal range and the power seems like its there. I really had no complaints... that is until today when I was putting away the car after driving home.

The car is idling like it wants to stall yet the RPMs are stable running the fan seems to improve the idle. The exhaust is coughing like the car is misfiring but there is no CEL. I put it in the garage and kept it running and grabbed my VAGCOM cable. A quick scan determined mostly electrical faults on the JB1 plugs, but since I had the battery out recently that did not concern me. What I did see was the a misfire was registered in cylinder 2 and it happened today according to the freeze frame.

The only thing I can thing over is that I did hear a distinct metal moving sound going into a driveway yesterday but could not see anything when I inspected the car. I could have a major exhaust issue that I cant see at the moment but I kind of doubt it.

Right now I cleared the codes and shut the car down for the night. Tomorrow I will be removing the JB1 and checking my exhaust for any obvious damage or misalignment.

A few things have changed since I got the car up and running, these are going to be the first things going back to stock to see if conditions improve.

Forge DV (suspecting this at the moment)
CTS Turbo Inlet Pipe
Neuspeed Hi-Flo discharge kit

After that..

42DD Downpipe
CTS Turbo Throttle Pipe
Forge Twintercooler

My spark plugs are less than a year old, although I could have a bad coil pack, unfortunately I'll have to take the car back to stock to get serviced under warranty to be safe.

If anyone has any troubleshooting suggestions please feel free to comment.

Had a similar "moment": it was a failed plug... Hope it''ll be as simple fix for you!!!

Man that sucks. Sounds like maybe it's exhaust related like you're thinking because of the scraping, but I'd think coil or plug first. Maybe a vacuum leak from one of the new parts? That's my 2nd guess :)

So far pulled the JB1 and the idle is better, re-ran auto-scan and it showed misfire in cylinder 1 now, but only 1 occurrence.

I have a stock DV on the way from DAP, in the meantime I have vagcom logging misfires right now, I expect to see some possibly due to my downpipe and being untuned.

I will probably drive it to work tomorrow just to see if I cant get any more misfires to log.

Just ran VCDS for about 10 minutes logging misfires on all cylinders with turbo enabled.

Revved it a couple times even, no misfires read.

Maybe my JB1 is going bad? I'm gonna drive the GTI to work tomorrow and beat on it a bit to see if I can get another misfire to trip.

Hopefully not your JB1. Since it's not active unless above 9psi, if it is the JB1 maybe a connector has a short or something. Hopefully it'll be fine tomorrow, you can put the JB1 back on and see what happens.. Keep us posted :)

Imho: check the simple things first... Hard to do when worry takes hold, I know, but go over things methodically, beginning with the most simple ones. Check your plugs, then all the mods.

One thing at a time; remember it's just as much part of the (fun!!) game as the rest...

Good luck, please keep us posted :)

Ben.

Weird exhaust note/idle seems to be back after my 25 mile commute, no issues on the drive in whatsoever.

Honestly if I wasn't listening to the exhaust after I pulled into the parking garage I wouldn't know anything was off.

JB1 is still off, no CEL, no difference in driving behavior, no decrease in MPG.

I will scan it again when I get home, I have a set of stock plugs so if I have another misfire code I'll try to swap the plug out.

Bad idle can be due to a vacuum leak. Sometimes issues with that are not as apparent when the engine is under load if it is a small leak.

Thats why I'm thinking its related to my Forge DV install, I have a stock DV on its way since I broke mine turning it into a GFB DV+.

Its either that or the turbo outlet pipe where it meets my intercooler, but that shouldn't be vacuum side.

Edit: Forge DV was also the last part I put on, issue did not occur with my CTS BOV.

Oiled the O-Rings but did not oil the piston inside, I didn't notice any trouble until I put the Forge DV on, so I may be swapping my GFB DV+ on tonight to see if the problem disappears.

The Forge DV is the only thing tied into a vacuum source at the moment.

The solenoid could be stuck open or jammed.

From my own personal observations, you're better off running just the straight OEM DV. My car has been running better and more consistently since i went back to the OEM setup. Plus it seems like the big tuners are all still running the OEM DV even at the crazy power levels, questioning the "need" to even "upgrade" that part in the first place. Hope you get your issue sorted.
