Photography "Critique"

OK guys, some of you thought I was bad when we got into "photography debates" you need to look at this thread over on an "Automotive Photography Forum" The Mustang shots that each and every one of you enjoyed, the photographers over on this "Automotive Photography Forum" basically said my HDR's were way overdone and said this and said that...read it and form your own opinions on their critique ...

It seems to me that they are "purists" and would much rather put a bowl of fruit in front of a car for the sake of it being "art" I looked at their websites and while i saw interesting cars, i was universally unimpressed with the colors and compositions, I guess thats why they didnt like my stuff - based on my opinion of their work, cant say i really blame them. ... you decide. oh and they said some stuff about you guys too.

I think they are great shots if you want the HDR look, dont worry about them. Your client was happy correct?

By the way I love this comment from that link, I would love to try to "educate" my clients that I have for my art.....I am sure I would have alot less of them.

There are clients out there who pay for kiddie porn too. Sometimes being a professional means educating clients beyond what they (think they) want.

I don't think your pics are bad at all, especially if that is the look you are going for. It seems to me you were going for dramatically done HDR's, so who's to say they are good or bad? True, the pics are a little on the unrealistic looking side of the HDR realm, but if that is what the client liked then who cares.
I'm guessing they wanted the pics to be much more of a subtle HDR photo?

I agree with both you and the people on the photography forums. The way I see it, you guys are looking at the shots at totally different standpoints. You're looking at them with an artistic eye. On the other hand, the members of the forums are looking at it in a more technical stand point. Both very legitimate positions.

Photography is such a relative thing.. whenever asking for any feedback, You need to take the comments with a grain of salt. You're basically putting yourself out there for critique, to take the bad with the good.

The photos themselves aren't in question here, I just don't think it's cool to post photos for critique and then proceed to complain/defend yourself or try to justify why you did what you did

What's even worse is involving other people/forums. Now that you've come back here and said stuff like:

"oh and they said some stuff about you guys too." are we supposed to get riled up and either A. go there and tell them they're wrong? or B. pat you on the back and say don't worry you're awesome don't listen to them?

The bottom line is you asked for a critique, live with it. From scanning that thread you posted, they also never personally attack you as a photographer, they just give their PERSONAL opinions on the HDR effect.

I agree as well. But it really does all boil down to what the client wants in the end right? If the guy liked them for their artistic merit, then that's what he wanted. Photography is really all subjective.

Read my last post on page 2...the owner of the site who happens to have the same name as one of the posters "John Thawley" was the one who invited me there to post, i didnt go there looking for a critique - he requested i post for the feedback. Im guessing he wanted to increase site traffic...so i obliged.

Im not asking you guys to go there at all, i am just sharing a different perspective with you, nothing more. take from it what you will.

He may have asked you to please post up on the site, but you didnt have to. Once you did agree to post, thats when you agreed to receive feedback. getting really defensive about comments that you openly put yourself out to get is, how do I put this, wack. And why did you put this forum on there? I understand there are photographers on this site but did you really think that was a credible defense? thats like "well.. the guys from ilovecowsex.com(not sure if thats a real site lol) really loved the pics, so there", it doesnt really prove anything. I personally love the pics, I love the HDR shots. Im in no way a photographer either. I just think you couldve taken the feedback better and that there was no need to include this site on there, especially as somewhat of a defense tactic.

I'm actually a member of that site as well. I do appreciate looking at HDRs and the amount of work that goes into them but I guess I am more of a "purist" myself when it comes down to it.

Great job on the HDRs, nonetheless!

Photography is an extremely subjective topic, and you can never gain EVERYONE's approval :smile:

forget it TOE_FAST. you got people on here who love your work, and your clients or friends probably think you are awesome. you probably will own up most of the people on here as far as photography is concerned. michael chu has some quality work, but both of you guys have different styles and i appreciate both of them. i like HDR but because some of the people on here have overdone it i have become more of a purist. that is not to say i dont like your HDR work though. way better than mine

either way, I really like the HDR pics of the stang. they came out uber sweet.
