^^ Certainly could be. I was sold on brakes and eLSD!

They definitely don't share the same transmission. The R doesn't have VAQ, it has an open front diff and haldex rear end.

My guess is that the PP and non PP GTI shares the same clutch. If anything, the R would have an uprated clutch due to OEM power/tq levels and AWD drivetrain.

The VAQ and Haldex bolt onto the same output-shaft/hub on the tran casing, that's the first thing my dealer said when they got a manual version in the air. The tech owns a MK6 Golf-R and said it looks like the same trans casing and hub bolt pattern, making an AWD swap pretty easy if I wanted lol.

As for the clutch, I have no idea. If you call the dealer, just have them cross reference part numbers.

better yet... take the PP VAQ and put it on a golf R

So then we must compare the casing form the non-PP with the PP ? I can't imagine the transmission is really different between the two

It's one or the other brother, the gear that the Haldex rear driveshaft bolts to the same place the VAQ diff bolts up to. If only though...

I hear VWs already taking some heat for the new Rs understeer tendencies on initial turn-in, something the PP car has none of. I wouldn't be suprised if the MK8 R had an e-LSD or two :)

I like the way you think!

There would still need to be code in the ECU to control the differential -- I would be surprised if that was present and could simply be enabled with VCDS.

I've clicked on the AWD system in VCDS and it says "cannot communicate with control unit" lol. I'm sure an AWD conversion can be done just like many have been done on prior generations of GTI. But there is no way of retaining VAQ with Haldex in this configuration.

does that mean the VAQ diff sits further back than the regular open different on non-PP cars?

Makes sense, the standard FWD 02M could accept the Haldex input shaft too when modified.

An AWD swap would be much easier on these platforms than in the past as it's virtually a bolt in swap, with the exception of re wiring the back half properly with an R or A3 harness. In the MK4 I had, we did a Haldex swap but involved cutting out the floor pan and a whole lot of other BS that I don't want to remember. That car is still on the road to this day (BT 2.0T 20v)

The VAQ diff is a hydraulically powered, electronically controlled proactive (vs reactive like normal LSDs) differential that is actually located outside of the transmission itself. It Bolts in-between the transmission and the right half-shaft, just like the yolk for the driveshaft on the Haldex unit. I don't think all GTI transmission casings have the bolt holes for these units to mount onto, only the PP and R transmissions.

Sounds sick, got a link or any pics? I helped do one of these swaps back in 05'-06' on a MK4 with a 35R/1.8T in Virginia... it was not fun. I understand it was easier in the MK5/6 though. This one looks super easy like you said, all you will need is rear subframe, exhaust and driveline pieces out of any MK7 R or AWD A3/S3 and it should be nearly bolt in from there minus wiring and coding.
