Park assist or park pilot?
I understand park pilot is the one that does the steering, which I didn't think was available on the gti?

Park Pilot is your front and rear parking sensors...
Park Assist uses these and adds additional side sensors front and rear to calculate suitable parking spaces based on your option of parallel or bay parking, then automatically steers the car into the space.

Heres VW glossary.....

http://en.volkswagen.com/en/innova...-glossary/parkpilotparkdistanzkontrolle.html

It is available as an option on the UK spec GTi's.

I have park assist and have used it one time in 8 months of ownership. Mainly to experience the car steering instead of me :D It is amazing how accurately it can park (gap on both sides was exactly the same), but I don't bother using it as I can park quicker
For our wives/partners who are less comfortable with parking it might be a good aid.

This is exactly why I opted for this option burso...my wife isn't confident at reverse or parallel parking....hence the reason why i've never used it [emoji4]

I can't parallel park for toffee, but I very rarely need to so I've not made much use of it, bay parking I can deal with (I'm a big boy now!) so not tried out that feature so far.

I liked it in my MK6, and didn't want to lose it even if I don't use it that much.

But mainly I got it because...

My car parks itself! How AWESOME is that! :D

I have it on my GT, and in the last year or so I could count on the fingers of one hand using it to actually park the car.
I find it far more useful for getting out of tight spots when you get a couple of "eejits" who park too close front and rear.
It's surprising how many don't realise it's not just for parking ;)

I'm confident I can manage with the help of parking sensors. But I'll give it a go just for the sake of the experience ;)

Can you please explain how this feature works?

Park Assist

Great post! Opted for park assist on mk7, (on order) did not realise you could use this feature to get out of tight spaces and bay parking. I have this on my mk6 but it only works on parallel parking. How does the system differentiate between a parking bay and parrellel space?

You either press the park assist button once or twice. It cycles through these two options.

...also a graphic of either a bay or parallel park bay is displayed on the info screen between the speedo and rev counter as well to help you pick the right manouver....
