Not that it matters, but VW dealers in the US sell Mobil 1 as of 2020.
In Europe, we had VW branded oil made by BP (Castrol) until 2020. From 2020 we have Shell as producer and when they changed from BP to Shell, they made a change from 5W30 to 0W30 in VW branded oil (and gas to liquid base oil is used on 0W30)

VW branded oil have very interesting line-up here:

10W40 Special E 501.01/505.00 ("Conventional Mineral Oil" on bottle)
5W40 Special G 502.00/505.00 (Described as "Synthetic technology", that means group 3 basically In German law)
5W40 Special D 505.00/505.01 (This one has just "Synthetic" on bottle, so it's "synthetic enough" to be called that way by German law. Oil for PD TDI and non-long life oil change)
0W30 Long Life II 506.01 (For R4 PD TDI and long life oil changes + R5 2.5 TDI and V10 TDI, "Full synthetic" on bottle)
0W30 Long Life III FE 504.00/507.00/Porsche C30 ("High performance motor oil" on bottle, FE from "Fuel Efficient" added when they switched from 5W to 0W )
0W20 Long Life IV FE 508.00/509.00/Porsche C20 ("Advanced Fuel Economy motor oil" on bottle)
0W40 SP (From Special Performance) 511.00 Audi branded oil (Only one "Made in France" instead of "Made in Germany", so not made by Shell. If I would guess it would be Total or Mobil1, as these two have refineries in France)

Have been using Motul 8100 Xcess 5W40 since I bought my GTI in 2018. I do not drive a lot of miles and typically have it changed every 5K miles (twice a year). I think 2018 was the last year that VW called for 5W40 in the EA888.

I like that the 8100 XCESS has the VW 502, Porsche A40, and MB 229.5 certs. I've been tempted to try Liqui Moly (probably the Leichtlauf?) but have yet to do so.

Whats the verdict between LM Molygen and Leichtlauf ?
Molygen is better. Proof?

Also it's easier to say Molygen.

I have used both extensively including track use. Molygen carries no approvals so keep that in mind. It's got the green UV dye for leak detection. The "MFC" (molecular friction control) is a tungsten (W) based friction modifier. I found it lose viscosity worse than anything I've used at the end of a typical oil change interval. Almost all 40 grades will end up as 30 grades in these engines due to shearing and fuel dilution but keep in mind they start out on the lower end of the SAE viscosity range so they are thin 40s. Leichtlauf isn't anything special - it's a typical Euro 40 grade with all the standard approvals - Porsche A40, BMW LL-01, MB 229.5, VW 502 00 and is a Group 3 hydrocracked synthetic just like every other one you can buy at Walmart...Castrol, Valvoline, Mobil 1, Penzoil, etc. Nothing wrong with either but Leichtlauf is a better product and even LM will tell you that if you ask/dig around. The issue with it is simply the cost - it's not worth $70 for an oil change kit online vs. $45 at Walmart. FCP reduces the sting if you do their LRG on it but you need to do them a lot to really make this worth it at ~$20 return shipping.

In Liquimoly's own words, Leichtlauf is the better of the two. But neither is anything special compared to the cheaper 5w40 options (Castrol, M1, Pennzoil, etc.)

I wouldn't use any of them again, they're opaque with their spec sheets, my first motor always had consumption issues with Leichtlauf (until it blew up), and you can get other mid-tier options at walmart for $5/qt.

That's interesting. I had the opposite experience haha. My first couple of oil changes were Castrol fills and I would burn 1-2 quarts over an interval. I switched to Leichtlauf and burning almost ceased completely. I might have to add a half a quart over a 7-8k interval now.

Liqui Moly. 5w40 Leichtlauf for my GTI. Ran it in my 2008 Rabbit for 123K miles, and currently in the 2016 GTI with 85K miles. All indications are it is working just fine. I never add oil.

Also - I've used: M1 0W40 Euro, 5W40 Euro, Quaker State 5W40 Euro, LM Leichtlauf High Tech 5W40, LM Molygen 5W40, and now HPL 5W40 Euro. I've not noted any consumption over the ~6 years/108K I've had the car beyond some slight usage on-track which would be normal. I noted no differences between the various oils in this respect.
