Oil Loyalty

I really have zero scientific reason to be loyal to the oils I like, but I do it anyway.
Let's hear about your loyalty or lack thereof.
Ill Start......Castrol and Mobil 1

I'm not saying I'd buy the castrol, but 15 cents is 15 cents.

personally I've never seen consistent results across an entire brand. Castrol 5w30 A3/B4, M1 0w40 are oils I'd buy again. I would not use their 5w40 oils. Same goes for Leichtlauf 5w40.

I've had really good results with pennzoil compared to motul in my subaru, but haven't tried either in the EA888 yet.

I have no loyalty. Whatever meets or exceeds VW's spec for cheapest is who I am buying from.
But thanks to the lifetime free oil changes at VW when I purchased new, and FCPEuro's 'free' oil change program, my maintenance costs have gone down.

VW dealer never expected me to have my GTI for close to 9 years hehe. Typically people swap out cars much sooner than that.

Constantly swapping between brand(s), every change for whatever brand X is on sale that day ...CAN.... cause an increase wear depending if they have competing additive package chemistry, but most won't keep a car long enough for that increase amount in wear to be an issue.

Pick whatever flavor of kool-aid you want, VWs as long as you change the oil a couple times a year, and not going high load with cold oil; the motors will outlast the chassis, especially if it spends time North of the rust belt.

But since we are on another, What oil?...thread... I am partial to Pennzoil Platinum/Ultra Platinum, and Valvoline. For off the US retail off the shelf brands

I liked Castrol's Euro 0W-40 A3/B4, but it got discontinued this year... I hoarded 4x 5QT jugs for the next ~3 oil changes... don't know what I will use after... but that's like 3 years of driving for me, so I have time to decide.

It was imported from Belgium and made exclusively for the US market... I have used it for last decade, starting with my old MK5 GTI... It never did me wrong, I have been really loyal to it.

It's not stocked at walmart currently but I can get it from Amazon and some of the local parts store. It has the new bottle design from this year, so I don't think it's being killed just yet.

I've mainly used Liquimoly. I have used Castrol twice in 90,000 miles, both times I had to add oil between changes (5,000 miles). I've never burned any using Liquimoly.

Used Mobil1 because it was cheap and readily available. Switched to Amsoil since they now do online ordering (hated having to go to a "authorized dealer"). Now switching to LiquidMoly since FCP does the lifetime warrenty thing; will probably be like $50 for an oil change.

It used to be super cheap pre 2020, $20-25 for the 5QT jug, sold everywhere, online, my local walmart, etc... Now its very hard to find and unreasonably expensive.... late last year it popped up in Walmart again, but online, for $33 and that's when i bought my horde...

I have read for the last couple of years its being discontinued, but I also saw that new bottle design... not sure what's going on, maybe just rumors at Bob is the Oil guy, we'll see.... Could simply be that their supply chain is still recovering from the pandemic.....

Edit: I went back and looked at the bottle, seems its no longer made in Belgium.... Its probably not the exact same formula/additives...?

The new bottle design probably differentiates it from the old one made in Belgium.

What's fucked up is they made the change on the amazon listing of the old oil, so it still has the reviews from the old Belgian made oil going back a decade and this is honestly a different product. The old switcheroo.

Who knows maybe its better or just as good / identical formula, similar quality, etc.....

the formula changes year to year no matter which country it's blended in. odds are good it's still the slightly better base stocks than 5w40 given the pour point, price, etc.

i think the 0w40 was easier to find than 0w30 last I looked.
