Checked oil level on the gti today and see what looks like yellow white oil on the stick. I just bought this car 2 months ago and I’m not that familiar with a turbo charged motor but the way the oil looks scared the crap otta me. Motor runs fine but could this be the beginning of water getting into the crankcase? The oil is
Ravenol vst 5/40. It’s what the previous owner was using. Oil was changed less than 1000 miles ago There is a catch can on it. Level seems ok if a bit high.

Yeah the catch can was added by the previous owner and it was almost full. I’ll put a stock pcv on it. I did adjust the level.
Thanks

Yes,
Just checked the oil level again this morning and it still looked high on a cold motor. Started it and let it idle for about 10 minutes, shut it off and the level came down to the top of the range. This is a racing line aftermarket dipstick installed by the previous owner. Oil looked good this morning, no foam ish looking crap. I drained the catch can yesterday which was full. Only drained off a small amount of oil from the crankcase.
Just measured it at 2-3 ounces

I’m looking at replacing the catch can with the stock pcv and see a huge difference in price. A Rein pcv ( made in china) is $170. VW part ( made in ?) is $350. These are both kits that include everything except the hose that goes from the turbo to the pcv. I’m not a big fan of crappy/cheap parts but is there that much difference?

I would first drain your current oil and swap out the filter

What do you need besides the valve and the gasket?

Looks to be ~$250 on parts.vw.com

I don’t have anything from the stock setup. So, I’ll need whatever it takes to eliminate the catch can system The original tubing from turbo to pcv was tossed by the previous owner. I am going to do an oil and filter before I do anything else
