OEM USB Port inside arm rest storage

Does anyone know when did VW introduce this USB port that is located underneath the arm rest? Was it for mk7 or mk7.5?
And does anyone know the part number and whether this can be retrofitted?

Then I found someone else talking about it here, post #4 - https://www.golfmk7.com/forums/index.php?threads/usb-location-anyone-move-it.339889/

Did you find the parts for this? I really want to install a vw USB hub to split option to use carplay both in the cubby and armrest. And all i still need is this insert for the armrest… 😅

Hi everyone!

I know it's a long dead post, but I feel the urge to retrofit this USB port into my 2016 e-Golf. I was able to find some part numbers for this here:
https://volkswagen.7zap.com/en/rdw/e-golf/goe/2016-774/0/035-35078/#6

What I know so far that you will need the USB hub installed in the center console in order to get this port working with the MIB unit (it will provide data connection, not just charging).
Retrofitting an USB hub is not so difficult (at least based on the information I found), but connecting it to the 12V in the interior fusebox might be hard without disassembling half of the dash trim, and the heaad unit might need some coding in order to work together with the new USB.
I've also read somewhere that if you already have the carplay capable USB port in the compartment above the shift knob, it might not work with the hub.

Did anyone retrofitted this successfully?

@Narzis I'm retrofitting the USB hub right now. The information is out there but I plan to put it all together this weekend.
Sounds great, i'm looking forward seeing your progress.

In the meantime I also did some research and only I got more questions lol
Sourceing the hub (with bracket and clip), the USB ports and the armrest usb does not look so difficult or even too expensive, but everywhere I look I see people struggling with wiring. I think that will be the main issue here, as it is not clear what kind of wires should be user, and wire types might be different depending on the actual MIB unit in the car, the type of the USB hub, etc.

if CarPlay can work through this port, then I may, possibly, potentially, have the willpower to take out the center console again 😂

if it even fits into the poopy manual handbrake center console.

I know that two of the USB ports will be capable of Android Auto/CarPlay. You can have two AppConnect devices connected/active at the same time, and switch between them.

I'm not positive about the third port for AppConnect, though it will work for charging (obviously) and data.

I promise the good stuff is coming, hub and cables... Hub was ordered on eBay, red power connector is from AliExpress (you only need pin 1, 2, and 4)
The small USB port replaces your existing USB port (shorter body) but will clip in just the same. Your existing port will NOT work properly with the hub.

Port 1 is purple, Port 2 is brown, Port 3 is black. The green is the connection to the MIB.

You have choice of USB Port part numbers...
5Q0 035 726 replaces your existing (I guess you don't really have a choice for this)
510 035 726 is USB port without a cover (and can be ordered from a US dealer, maybe installed in the Atlas)
6C0 035 726 B is USB port with a door (does not show valid from US dealers, but can be sourced elsewhere)

I ordered the LVDI cables with the correct colors./ends in the lengths I wanted for my install locations.
But you can get generic cables, or all cables with the same colors, and trim the alignment tabs as needed to make them work.
Custom cables are cheap enough that I may end up ordering different lengths (or ends, 90 degree specifically) once install time comes.

You're not stuck with the manual handbrake you know ;).

When are we drilling into these transmission cases for start-stop. I've got a wild but persistent bug in my mind to install the VAQ E-diff. I've sourced one (don't tell anyone). VW never installed it in the TDI, or rather, the GTD, but I don't know why. Obviously I will connect the module to can bus first to see what the car thinks about it... but the ABS obviously supports it and I'm semi-positive I saw mention of it the coding for my ECU.

I really think you’re setting the bar for retrofits - VAQ retrofit ⁉️ I’d be super interested to see how that goes.

you know, if I had the DSG then I would seriously consider the e-parking brake, just to get Traffic Jam Assist working. without that though, I don’t know 🤷🏼 the center console is a lot nicer though..

I haven’t had much time to myself these days unfortunately, to get stuff done. my goal for this year is to get the headlights and start/stop done before it gets too cold.
