Occasional smoke from exhaust and a check engine light

I just got my mk7 gti last week and have only filled it up once. It was modded when I got it and the only technical mods I know are there are an intake and an exhaust. There’s a Cobb sticker on the windshield so there may be a tune on it as well.

Since I started driving it, there’s been some puffs of smoke either when really stepping on it or just idling in a drive thru, but nothing constant.

The other day, the check engine light came on. I checked it and it threw the codes 7e8 and 7e9. I tried looking these up but got various answers from air/fuel intake issues, to emissions issues, to possible rod knock or a problem with the rod knock sensor. It doesn’t sound or feel any different so I don’t think it’s anything too serious, but since I’ve only been driving the car for a week I’m a little concerned. I’m taking it to the dealership tomorrow to get everything straightened out and find out what all has been done to it, but if anyone has any clue what’s going on with it I’d love to hear it!

Curious to know what the dealership said?
Haven’t gotten it to the dealership yet, turns out I scheduled the appointment for a month away.

That said, the check engine light has come and gone on its own a couple times and it hasn’t been smoking, although it does still smell like burning oil.

I was able to get in touch with the previous owner and find out what all has been done to the car (including that it is tuned for 93 octane which is not what I’ve been putting in it) and that the car was serviced at a third party shop so that’s where I’m going to take it.

I’ll update when I find out what’s going on with it.

Update:

Took it to a vw/Audi/Porsche specialist mechanic and they found that the turbo that was in it just wasn’t working. I’m not for sure to what degree it wasn’t working but I don’t think the turbine was spinning.
Anyways, the turbo was just sucking up oil and burning it off, thus causing the smoke out of the exhaust.
Also the smell isn’t necessarily burning oil but fumes from the cat less down pipe.
