Good call on the dash cam, cheapest insurance you can have against idiots on the road! (he says as the dash cam for his own GTI sits uninstalled in his toolbox bc he ran out of fuse taps lol)

More custom is more cool, especially the subtle touches
Thanks, subtle is the goal with the GTI. The more I can keep it downplayed, the more it surprises people when it's quick.

Harbor freight fish tape ftw, got the rear camera wire run through to the hatch. I'm not sure if I'm gonna retain the present placement of the camera but for the moment we'll see how much it annoys me, it's dead center and a bit below the decal on the rear window. I also found a location that seems reasonable for the camera up front, and I think I've got a plan for running the cable the rest of the way. I've never hardwired anything before but I have a hardwire kit and a basic logical understanding of what's going on, so hopefully it's not too bad.

no pics for the time being, number one because it's a camera and number two because I might rethink my rear placement. But some stuff that might help the next person who wants to wire up a camera:
  • Fish sticks and fish tape will help immensely. Fish tape to get the cable through the hatch grommets (you need the flexibility) and fish sticks to run your rear camera cable up to the front of the car. Masking tape (lots of it) to hold the cable end to the fish stick will also be helpful.
  • Grab handles don't come out like the mk4s -- there's no screws, just these awful clamp things. They say you can use a pair of pocket screwdrivers to release them, I wasn't having any luck and ultimately just left them in place.
  • MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ROOM TO REMOVE/REINSTALL CABLES WITH YOUR PLACEMENT. This might go without saying, but better left said twice. I wish my camera were a bit more hidden, but I've got good access to disconnect cables, operate buttons, etc.
  • Be cautious around the curtain airbags. Goes without saying, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to disconnect the battery as well. I didn't, because I'm not a smart man.
  • I left most of the slack coiled above the headliner so I can adjust rear camera placement. Think similarly to a service loop, because taking pillar bits off is annoying. I completely removed the upper B pillar, but the A pillar is just partially disconnected for the time being. You're on your own for the C pillar, mine came out for the harness install so it was a little easier getting the top portion of it out again.
It's not a bad install but it's fucking annoying.

listen i just saw this
you mean you don't have the vaccine chip set up to automatically project posts in my build thread directly to your consciousness? here I thought we were friends 😂

I'm sure we'll be back up that direction, the OEM stuff had like 40k on it when pulled and is stashed in my garage. I'll keep it around for you, I didn't really have a plan for it otherwise. Besides, I need some haven hot chicken again

Front* sway bar came in, not gonna bother taking the foam out because it's still way too cold here to install. But that's gonna be project #1 as soon as it's warm enough, and I'll knock out the subframe collars while I'm at it.
