I want to try self-tuning, but I was overwhelmed reading through the documentation on the FB group. Maybe I just need to look through it again.

Download TunerPro.

Download whatever appropriate .bin that is compatible with your boxcode from the repository.

Download whatever appropriate .xdf is compatible with your .bin (S50, A05 are the two most common, probably S50 for 15-18, A05 for 19+ GTI)

Fuck around on TunerPro to get comfortable with navigating the tables and making changes etc.

You can do all of that and never flash anything at all to your car. I just fiddled around and stuff for ~6mo before actually flashing a file.

Once you actually flash it is when you find out though.

Now I'm 137 revisions in. :ROFLMAO:

You find out more as you fuck around more. It's pretty simple and people are willing to help.

Yeah, facebook is awful. The docs from the Discord will, as far as I can tell, get you to a point where you can at least flash a file to your car and have it run fairly safely. The biggest thing seems to be that there's a lot of stuff you don't need to touch -- so you just leave it alone.

It's like going to a Chinese buffet. You see stuff like Jamaican Jerk Salmon, but you know not to fuck with it. So you just go get the tasty pepper chicken and some wonton soup, maybe grab some sushi, and enjoy.

CSB, I once made the above-referenced mistake. Don't trust Chinese people to make a Jamaican dish. Or maybe it was just that particular buffet being on the verge of shutdown. Pour one out for Evergreen though, they had the tastiest, sketchiest food. Only time I ever got sick was when I went for that salmon.

I've been asking all sorts of dumb questions in the OS tuning discord to get things off the ground, and everyone's been super cool about it. I think I'm at a point where I can flash shortly-ish, then log and start making some revisions/turning things up a bit. I'm so anxious but so excited. And hanging on for dear life, this week is somehow simultaneously busy AND dragging and all I want is for it to be Friday so I can be on a plane to Monterey

Divorced the AP from the GTI. Gonna keep it on hand for a little, at least til I get a base OS tune on the car. Continuing to ask dumb questions, make silly excel calculators, and learn more about how/why this works.

So close to the fun! Log, tweak, log, tweak, log, wtf?, ask discord, tweak, log repeat.

And if you're like me you hyperfixate on calc hp and create a spreadsheet of random fast cars and their power to weight ratios to see what you stack up against them on paper😂

Oh yeah, already been there lol trying to base on 0-60 and 60-130 (where I can find them) to see how I might stack up... I can say firsthand though it hung with one of those 392 Challengers far better than I expected when EQT, didn't walk away from it but was able to keep up.

I wish I understood enough to write up a guide for the later ECUs, the guide I'm presently following doesn't always provide the best info. Working on the boost table a bit now.

No need. Just dominate on the skreets.
y'all are kinda winning me over with how I've not been kicked from the group yet for lack of competence/stupid questions. It might wind up being mamba season in a year or two (house projects suck, and I want MPI/flex before I get off of the is20)

Drove the car to work on the stock tune. Weird to not have all that power, but I wouldn't describe it as disappointing. But I think I'm close to having my base tables built out, and I'm looking forward to it. Oddly enough, even with the stage 3 daily clutch, stock flash is oddly easier to drive/take-off than the tune was. Pretty amped to start fooling around with stuff and seeing dividends.

Mmm, rear visibility. These have been on my list for ages, finally scored a set. I feel like it's hard to get the cloth GTI euro headrests, so that's rad.

Oh, and it took the flash and idles 🤙 I thought for sure I was gonna have some sort of issue, because I always do. We'll see what happens once I can get some logs.
