New Golf GTD R

Is there any truth in a super quick GTD- R?.

Just had a friend pay a visit today as I'm still off work after my accident. He mentioned about a GTD R 2016/ 2017. Is this simply a load of hype. Truth or fiction?

I don't know, but not impossible as there is a 240ps Passat, trouble is where do you pitch the market for a such a vehicle?

There's a new bi turbo diesel in the Passat - 240 bhp or thereabouts - some people think it slots straight into the Golf as it is MQB Platform - some people at VW have said in interviews it doesn't.

Before you get to that idea you have to think, where would it fit into the range? The engine would also be heavier. I am not discounting it but it would take a lot of rejigging on VW's
part.

Car manufacturers like to create rumours, it keeps people interested and makes people think they are doing something.

Could happen though.

I think a higher performance electric car is more realistic, the GTE sounds an interesting option. If & when the time comes.

I am considering a Golf R as a replacement to my GTD when the time comes. But a GTD R could make me think again. I think, if they did bring one out, it would be a direct competitor for the R, that may influence VWs decision.

X2. Depending on how I feel after getting the GTD back. I may change.

It would have to be 4wd, my GTD is at the brink of what's realistic for a front wheel drive: too many angry shetland ponies hiding in that engine bay.

A GTD R is wishful thinking.

Yes, the engine may fit the Golf. But the issue is the corresponding gearbox.
With 500 Nm of torque it would need the same DQ500 DSG7 as in the Passat
and 4WD. I doubt this DSG gearbox will fit the smaller Golf easily.
Even more, you'd have to pay 5000 € more than for a current GTD DSG at least.
See the price difference on the Passat engines (190 PS DSG FWD vs 240 PS DSG
4WD).
Who's willing to pay that amount of money on a Diesel Golf? Yes, there are few
addicts who would. Because they love Diesels. But the majority wouldn't pay
40.000 € for a car which isn't as quick as a Golf R. With 240 PS and at least
1500 kg weight even a GTI would be quicker.

It's not the point that I wouldn't spend money on such a car. It doesn't make
sense for Volkswagen.
I'd say, have (more) fun with a Golf R or be sensible and safe fuel with a GTD
or GTE. If you can't decide between, get a GTI. Or so.
