So after driving my Golf R with the G25-660 turbo on the car for the weekend, I can finally give my first impression of this kit.
First of all, WOW! I knew I wanted more power than what the IS38 would produce but the car is a whole new animal. United Motorsports killed it with this tune! Still working out some cold start idle and stud seeing issues with them but once the car is warmed up, it’s perfect. Idle and just cruising around is like a stock car. It’s even more quiet than before. Absolutely beautiful!
As for the power, the power band is delayed roughly 800-1000 RPM from the IS38 but once it hits, it puts you back in the seat. 50-100 happens in 3-5 seconds. It’s an absolute beast in the upper RPM range and the car seems to love it. Currently pushing 32 PSI and holding 28-30 PSI throughout the powerband. Still on stock block so the torque is limited to about 425-450 UM predicts. Horsepower should be close to 500 or a little more.
United Motorsports suggested the engine may be choking up a bit with the stock air box and suggested a larger intake for the engine. The car is a full AMS build so I planned on getting their intake soon anyways. I’m also on the stock catback exhaust so once I upgrade that as well, I should pick up another 15-30hp on the car.
If you are on the fence with this kit and want big power without spending crazy money, this kit can easily get you in the 11’s and maybe the 10’s if you have a DSG gearbox. Just for reference, the shop that did the install, advised me my setup felt a little bit faster than another car in the shop that had the APR EFR kit on it. Take that for what it’s worth but I found that interesting.
Overall, the car feels stock during normal driving but can easily take out 90% of the cars on the street. I’m very happy with my decision to go with a full frame turbo over a hybrid. UM did an excellent job with the tuning!
