And still not all warm and fuzzy about the red stripe and chrome treatment around the headlights. Way too busy and borderline Honda-esque.

Huh. Now that you say that, I agree. I'm OK with the little red badge on the side, and even with the red stripe on the grille. But when you add in those headlights, that makes it all overboard.

I wonder if maybe they missed a design meeting somewhere. Maybe the paint colors were determined after the headlight designs?

Ah, well. Ten minutes from now all this will be forgotten. It's a GTI, made to drive--not to look at from the outside.

Congrats on that color!! I love it! I was actually looking at them on cars.com and that's the color I am drawn to. It looks fantastic. I am jealous, in a good way[emoji41][emoji1360]

Salt is a fact of life, and simple chemistry would have you understand that below a certain temperature rust won't form and isn't a risk....My brand new Autobahn is covered with salt, and has been for two weeks. But at 5 deg F, I simply don't care. Temps will go up, and I will carefully wash it off. Problem solved....Salt in and of itself is not a problem.

Don’t be too content. Why do you think they put salt on roads? To prevent ice. Simple chemistry indicates that a NaCl brine can remain liquid down to -5*F. CaCl2 can remain a liquid to -59*F. Rust can form, but the reaction is slowed somewhat at low temperatures. Not much you can do, I lived in Alaska for 27 years and salt was on the roads six months a year. Mostly it was added to sand to keep it flowing. Once they went to MgCl rust was much less of a problem.

The good news is that today’s vehicles have much better rust protection than in the past, but as stated, salt is a fact of life for many.

And heated garages are worse for this entire process than simply leaving your car at ambient temps when it's below freezing.

Congrats Mike. I really like the color! Should do fairly well hiding dirt. Enjoy the 6 year 72,000 bumper to bumper warranty.

Curious as why you purchased a 2018 when you already have a 2017 GTI.

Why do people doubt the discount? You make it sound like 2018 GTI's are special cars. They are not. And right now the GTI is becoming a very niche vehicle. All sedan sales are in the hopper. It's now middle of winter where foot traffic and sales go to die. I can see it easy. It only took about 2 months for the 2017's to be highly discounted. And we now know dealers are still profitable after giving $6k discounts. Go figure.

Car looks awesome OP! I'd drive that in a heartbeat! I didn't see you answer about leather or cloth? How is stereo system? It's the non Fender correct?

Agree with discount question aside from not dignifying a certain troll’s questioning what I got.

Its a part of social forums where people talk anything "without a reason" just because you dont have to meet the other person face to face.

I was fully set on getting a 17 SE at $7000 off MSRP. I could get this all over in my local (Milwaukee) area. I started poking around at northern IL dealerships and found two that had significant discounts on 18s. Another dealer (Elgin VW) listed over $4000 in discounts. A bit misleading as it includes ALL possible discounts including two I did not qualify for. Still pretty significant discounts for a product not even formally released yet.

I assume dealerships know the market better than I do.

The manager said he also wanted to see the green and is now going to order more. For those in the area I found Fox Valley VW to be a great dealership. No b.s. Straight shooters. The manager said it was essential for me to see the car both inside and outside. He ‘gets it’.

So Fox Valley had the one 18 on its lot exactly two days. Now they have none. :)

Its good to know that you ended by buying a 2018 for a great deal even though you were looking out for a 2017 and for sure that green will stand out of the crowd. From your experience, looks like its one of the dealer in MidWest which one should keep in mind.

I wasn't just referring to rust.
Salt looks like crap on a car, and it's worse on a dark colored car.

Salt is the devil, moving south was one of the best decisions I've ever made.
This color definitely looks better in your pics than the dealer pics I've found so far.
Also GTI front bumper is much better than R front bumper on the refresh.

I moved south and even with zero precipitation over the last month they still insist on spraying brine water daily...that’s not how this works South Carolina, not how any of this works
