Evening all,

It is time to change my tires as I cannot stand the potenzas that came with the GTI (s001). I have been looking around but cannot come to a definite answer regarding what to go for. The current potenzas pick up every impfection on the road and is felt on my back as i spend about 3-4 hours a day in the car - apart from being way too noisy.

Keeping tire brand aside for now, I have a dilemma:-

Either go for:

1. stock spec of 225/40/18 on a better and more comfortable tire with less noise (good year eagle f1 or good year efficient grip performance(as they are brilliant on my BMW).

2. go for 235/40/18 of the same mentioned above.

3. go for 225/45/18 so as to get a thicker tire meaning more comfort.

4. extreme...but 235/45/18 - this would increase grip due to wider tires but also increase comfort due to it being 45. However, I have no idea if this setup will work on the GTI, hence the dilemma.

Which of these scenarios/choices is applicable to the GTI MK7 that would not result in rubbing issues or any other problems. My ideal would be scenario 3 or 4 as comfort is paramount but I am open to understanding otherwise.

Now as for brands I am considering (all summer tires) :
Dunlop Sport Maxx RT (but heard their life is horrible)
Goodyear Efficient Grip Performance
Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetric

Thanks in advance :)

stick with 225/235/40/18's, if you don't plan to lower the car at all go with 235/40/18 for added comfort. The tires will depends on the tire brands of course.

im currently using Bridgestone Potenza RE11 245/40/18 and lowered on Eibach ProKit...had rubbing issues on the fronts but removed the top inner screws and this solved the rubbing problems

RE11 are very meaty though and very stiff sidewalls...im guessing normal comfort tires should be smaller in the same size...just my input :D

So a wider track will help improve comfort as well? That's a positive I guess. As long as its a good tire though right because the potenzas are horrible!

Based on that I would go for 235/40/18

Also did you mean "if you dont plan to lower at all" I should go with 235/45 and not 235/40 as you mentioned. Just need to confirm before I make my decision haha

Thanks for that, what do you mean by "normal comfort tires should be smaller in the same size"?

Im a bit skeptical of trying bridgestone again to be honest. This is the second time i've had a bad experience with the brand.

meaning that the RE11 have very meaty threads and are a bit thicker than standard road tires...its in the extreme performance tire category

i would recommend the Goodyear AS2 235/40/18, grippy and comfortable

What did you end up going with. I am wondering if I can go with 225/45/18 as well. My understanding is that it will add 1" height overall to the tire/wheel. If so will I get any rubbing. And, can the tire pressure sensor be reset in the car menu to adjust to the taller tire size?
