Yeah Toyotas had a good rep even when i worked On them. Some showed up for warranty, some didn’t. Luck of the draw i suppose

I think It comes down to a two things here honestly.
1) routine maintenance
2) how the car is driven on a day to day basis

Example: I have 2017 GTI 6MT non pp and i do My maintenance way ahead of schedule. Does that completely prevent something from going wrong? Not necessarily but i know My shit is up to date in regards to mileage and service.

A good buddy of mine had a GLI with over 150k and ran like a champ before it got totaled. I plan To ride mine out as long as possible, which will involved higher maintenance fees overtime unfortunately. (Carbon cleaning at 70k, plugs every 10k due to tune, clutch eventually (15k on stage 1 at the moment), timing chain at 100k) etc
Obviously always exception to the rule. But, when I was looking for long time on used market I rarely ever see higher mileage ones and highly reputable Indie shop here told me this week about the chronic problems and much much higher maintenance costs vs. Japanese cars. I've always wondered why German parts and labor cost so much more when both are imported. I think it's a lame excuse. BMW is garbage. But for whatever reason people continue buying them and making excuses when they have lots of big recurring problems.

At the end of the day, I was warned by multiple car friends, research but bought anyway. I'm hoping to pick GTI up tomorrow or day after at latest and then I have to weigh my decision on keeping it or moving on. I know I'm at just under 34k and just the 40k service with DSG is expensive not including what seems to be dash light comes on every other week.

Obviously, my point was to go in and handle your business. You asked for feedback, you got it. G

Hope you make the right decision! I hear the Veloster beats the GTI in everything...

Yeah, unfortunately not easy decision at all in this horrible market. I will say on the positive side, most people complain about paying more new currently but tend to leave out the other big side of the math equation....there will most likely never be a time again where you can get this much back on a depreciating asset.

I've pretty much decided if I move on from the GTI I'll be going back to NA, no more turbos. Lol, that's probably bad words here. Turbos in all manufacturers tend to have more issues for multiple obvious reasons.

I’d suggest an honest google review if you feel like stirring it up with that dealer, but yeah I hate dealers as I’ve never had a good relationship with any of them. I don’t trust anyone to do anything on my car, and it’s a crappy feeling.

Regarding leaving forced induction: fwiw, I had a great experience with the lf4 engine found in the ats-v and ct4 bw, but I think Cadillac sucks as a brand and would never want them (Caddy dealer) to touch a car they rarely see so I did everything myself. My golf isn’t under warranty and I do everything myself, or will pay a reputable import shop when the time comes.

At the end of the day, it’s just a car and this ridiculous quest for good service is part of the game. It seems like there are good dealers out there but most are shit. Good luck.

Getting car back today. They asked if I wanted carbon cleaning while open, I thought hard and declined. Cylinder 2,3 injectors, coils, plugs replaced along with thermostat housing but no water pump all warranty covered. Maybe I should have had it cleaned? I had no time to make decision.

Having body shop hook me up on light replacement.

If this is anything like doing a clutch job and NOT replacing the throw out bearing while it's open........ I'd say that could come back to bite you. It was open and likely the only time it will be for years so it makes sense to do preventative maintenance like this as it's a coin flip as to if you'll get significant and problematic carbon build up or not. So keep your fingers crossed!

Appreciate it. Hopefully some more people will look at pics and let me know. I've never really seen inside, so not sure. Also, undecided if keeping car long-term so that was another reason. Wonder how much the 2 injectors, coils, plugs and thermostat housing would have cost with no warranty??

Nah.... I'll take a true Japanese car in 2022 which would be Mazda over Honda if I move on. Honda not the Honda of old. Garbage 1.5 and poor quality control. Mazda might be a small company but they make quality, reliable cars. Underrated.

However, with this BS on my Carfax now I'm taking a hit on resale and I still have 4 years and 50k miles warranty remaining. That's a lot of warranty and I don't put more than 10-12k per year.

carbon cleaning usually recommended 60-80k miles. you're way under.

"don't see a lot of high mileage gti's for sale"
maybe because we all keep them forever :D

Nice. I find that extremely hard to believe because there's TONS on the used market. Very very few have high mileage. Please do show me some with 200k+ original engine transmission.
