My First Oil Change in the R - Dead easy - Just some tips and links

Well, after a quick read on here I knew it would be pretty easy, but it was stupid easy lol

Anyway, I'm just posting because I had bought this tool, and although some just use a flat head, etc..this guy actually holds the plug fairly well (ie. it doesn't fall off into the dirt/used oil pan -- you can literally put the new plug on the tool and invert/shake it...it doesn't fall off). Anyway, for $10, it was a no brainer when I ordered up my filters.

Drain plug tool:

Oil filter tool:

Oil filters:

Oil drain plugs

...now, you'll notice I link to the genuine filters/plugs. When I bought them (maybe even now -- I didn't verify)...the genuine filters and plugs were actually cheaper because of the 5 pack filters. You can also buy at RockAuto but you can't get the Schwaben tools there.

For anyone wondering. Very easy, bullet point stats below.

Drained oil: probably around 5.5L
Fresh oil added: 5.7L (this was at the exact half point -- I may add another 250ml -- gonna check it after a good drive)
Oil used: Mobil 1 - European Formula - 0W40 (the manual actually states 5W30 or 5W40 -- so lets not debate what the engine sticker says or what's better...blah blah)
Oil filter torque: on the filter housing -- but 25nm
Drain plug torque: no torque -- no 'extra' tightening like I've seen in the forum somewhere. Just turn until it 'clicks/locks' into place

- Pull off the plastic engine cover to get better access to the oil filter housing (it's retained by some round-knobby snap things -- they wont break) -- give it an upward pull in all 4 corners
- I primed the oil filter housing, but i feel this is un-necessary as it drains out into the engine anyway.
- This was just a peace of mind oil change at 3000km (1800 mi)...the oil was a little murky but still looks and felt goood
- I re-used the plug (hence the benefit of the tool for not dropping it in the used oil pan) ...didn't feel I needed a new plug after only 3000km...

Anyway, I do have pics but don't feel the need because it was just so easy.

I don't think that oil is vw 502 rated. Any reason you choose it?
I used it twice in my MK5 FSI and thought it was crap. I was burning about a quart after a few thousand miles. Switched to LM, runs smoother and more quiet and my consumption issue is gone

Never used it VW but used different viscosity Mobil 1 in my old car no issues, but will stick to vw recommended and approved oils in the Golf to avoid issues. Pensoil euro 5w 40 for me :)

Is this an ECS ad? ECS is a joke....

The MK7 has been out since 2014 and we're getting tutorials on how to change the oil, as if it isn't absurdly easy to begin with? I feel like this has already been well covered in the past 5 years.

Nothing wrong with M1. I use 0W40 Castrol Edge because it can be had for dirt cheap from Amazon, and it's a pretty good oil.

ECS is hardly a joke and that oil meets VW specs. Lighten up folks.

Mobil 1 0w40 is VW502 spec, so you wouldn't have 'issues'.

Exactly, FYI, https://mobiloil.com/en/motor-oils/mobil-1/mobil-1-fs

VW502/505 and 503

so ya, I’d say it’s approved. Hey if it’s good enough for Porsche...

also, for Canadians 50% off this week at Can tire!!
