Noticed you're in Ohio, do they salt their roads or do they use sand? I'm 2 hours East of Detroit and the salt absolutely rips up the underside. Do you get undercoatings done?

They use salt here. The previous owner had a carwash membership so I think that saved the underside. Surprisingly, the Black R with 115k miles is just slightly worst than the White R with 37k miles. The White R came from Connecticut though and the Black has been in Ohio its entire life.

I find removing and cleaning behind the fender liners and side skirts saves a lot of headache. I've also been getting everything coated once a year but I've already had a bunch of refurbishing done through VW corrosion warranty. Pain in the ass, eventually it's unavoidable unless they're garaged for the winter.

Also this build thread is a funny coincidence, my partner and I have matching black/white golfs.
Love the builds so far, keep the updates coming (y)

Notes:
I love the feel of the new clutch. I only have a couple miles on it, but it feels great. I did have to remove my clutch bump stop since the car couldn't register when the clutch was pressed to start the car.

Car threw a ton of codes due to having the battery disconnected for a couple weeks... or so I thought. VCDS couldn't clear the codes. After doing some diagnosing, I removed the front left speed sensor and cleaned it. All codes were gone! These ranged from ABS faults to airbag faults with almost everything in between. Glad I resolved this issue.

I tried to install an ECS Tuning Bleeder Block, but it wouldn't seat on the new throwout bearing. Ended up removing the yellow restrictor from the factory bleeder block.

On a more personal note, this was a huge accomplishment for me. I am 21 years old with some mechanical background as I am going to be a senior in the fall majoring in mechanical engineering. A lift would have made this far easier, but it was a great learning experience.

Yeah man, congrats. Some of that stuff isn't easy. I know plenty of people have done it on jack stands, but I wouldn't want to change a clutch on a QJ.

Completed a mini-project for the Black R. The previous owner did a toll on the driver seat bolster. Every time the seat was moved, foam would fall out the bottom.

Parts:
Bottom Seat Foam: 5G0881375AK - $87.99

Tools:
Plastic Pry tools,
Flathead screwdriver
T30 Torx Bit
Side Cutters for Factory Hog Rings

The Process: BE CAREFUL WITH THE LEATHER... the lower section alone is like $450 from VW parts.
Remove the seat. Just 4 bolts and 2 wiring connectors. (Disconnect battery)

Removed the side trim pieces and out came the bottom cushion.

Comparison of the new and old foam.

Transferred the factory heating element. Used spray adhesive to attach to the new seat.

Completed!

Just had my white Golf R aligned at a performance shop. My passenger rear wheel sticks out further than my driver rear wheel. The rear camber/toe matches on both sides. I tried shifting the subframe, but it made almost no difference. Next up is to add more camber and correct the toe for the rear end.

Big changes you made in one go! I love those apex wheels.
It’s always interesting seeing what people do at stages of their life. When I was 21 I had a pos ford escort. It took me a while to grow up but I think I’m doing ok now.
