MPI / e85 / is38

Has anyone on here gone MPI and e85 on just the is38 swap? Seen a few people that have gone MPI on the 1.8, but always with hybrid swaps. I know the is38 is fuel limited on our motors, so I’m thinking MPI on just 93 will still provide an increase, then the UM proflex should provide a nice bump on top of that. Looking for any input, been itching for MPI and e85 for a while now

Running full e85 just seems to be a pretty safe way to make power on the 1.8 and 2.0 motors that also seems appealing

Golf r/s3 guys have gone mpi to run full e85 with good gains

You already have the IS38 bolted on and run UM software. Sounds like a no brainer to safely fuel the turbo if you're looking to increase the boost and performance. Potential carbon cleaning benefits too. If it's a DD, an MPI IS38 or small hybrid setup is probably the sweet spot for the 1.8T.

I think the main reason there aren't more 1.8t cars running MPI is because we're so software limited.
As @J Peterman says, you're already UM so it's not as big of a jump to add on. For someone from another tuner to go MPI is almost a $2500 project (Hardware is $1100+, and the UM tune + MPI + BT add on is ~1200).

Our hpfp is just so weak.

are we still limited by fuel even after MPI due to our HPFP limitations?

Short answer, no. With MPI and a suitable lpfp we're not fuel limited anymore on an is38. Shouldn't be anyway.

Cars have been running with only port injection for decades. Assuming you don't lean too much on the MPI, you won't lose all the benefits that the direct injection provides. Based on some documentation that I've seen, you *need* to continue to use the direct injection to keep things cool, but they should only need to provide a small percentage of the total, and the hpfp should be up to that task.

@joedubs - that's what I thought, the comment on the HPFP just threw me for a loop, thanks

1 step closer, just purchased a PagParts 450 LPFP kit, just need to decide on MPI kit now (PR, CTS, A2B)

I have the PR kit and it seemed alright. The inlet to the rail is REALLY tight against the head (and I see why CTS uses a T and feeds it from the drivers side instead). I don't like it. Their fuel feed also doesn't have a swivel so if you use their line, you have to attach it to the rail and then run it down the car (unless you're going flex, in which case you'd cut the line 8" before the rail anyway). That said, I do like that the last injector isn't a dead end, but I'm no engineer.

The thread in adapters were a little funky on my manifold because the molded plastic was already the size of the drill bit (and they sit deeper). There's a big red "call us if the drill bit is too small" part in the instructions. They just said to install the threaded inserts the same way but make sure it bottoms out. Apparently it's so rare that they haven't seen it first hand, they've just heard reports about it.

There's lots of talk/complaints about the injectors that the different companies use. I went with PR because they seem like a quality company. I've never had anything from CTS fit the way it should.

A2B MPI kit just ordered with their current sale going on, $150 off regular price was a good deal. All that's left will be install and tuning

Most looking forward to running full e85 and being able to turn up the boost a bit, currently UM only runs 22 psi

Just did an ethanol sensor for a flex fuel tune with Reflect Tuning. I have all of the parts for mpi ready to go next. I'll probably just give this a go for a little bit first and see how it does. I'm is20 with a 2.0 hpfp
