I watched a walk through of this. I really like the way it looks and I love the interior for the most part. The things I hate are no buttons, the dumb shifter thing for the DSG is ridiculous, and why would you make a remote with capacitive buttons? Also I really like the steering wheel.

Orders for the Mk8 are open in the UK.

A small thing, which is I guess, down to cost cutting, is that the new model does not have electrically folding door mirrors. Email Uk customer service and was told there were no plans to include this on UK models, and not available as an optional extra. He added 'we don't think there will be demad'!

Surely the GTI or R models should come with this as standard even if the more basic models don't. I think that the customer service person is in for a shock. Do you remember that the first 7.5 GTI models didn't come with front foglights?

The New polo has the option to fit folding mirrors as a factory option on base cars and is included on the GTi version, Electrically folding door mirrors will be available on UK spec mk8 golfs and standard on gte, gtd, GTi and R, the customer service advisor is wrong!
Did you know the UK is the worlds largest market for the golf GTI!

The first batch of UK spec mk7.5 GTI’s were factory mis-builds as UK spec did include front fog lights.

Yes, I’d be very surprised if UK spec cars didn‘t have electrically folding mirrors, or worse case scenario, all the hardware is there, which can be activated via a coding change.

It’s not unknown for VW Customer Services to give out incorrect information - they’ll probably be getting their information from VW UK product and marketing material, which invariably contains errors, omissions and inconsistencies.

As for the looks of the mk8 GTI; sorry, but it’s not for me. IMO VW have made a very good job of ‘Uglifying’ what was a very good looking car in the mk7 / mk7.5 with a small number of visual changes. I don’t like the touchscreen overload interior either - IMO, cheap looking and very distracting to use while driving. The car will still sell well though, because it’s a Golf GTI.

DO you have a source for this? IF so, could you share this info?

I know it's a matter of personal preference, but that's just ugly IMO. It looks like it's got a monobrow and is squinting. Plus the shape of the taillights and the hatch look like the Atlas to me. The seats look nice though, particularly the integrated headrests. Looks like the manual mode is gone from the shifter. Also looks like they tried to make the dashboard as thin as possible, which made the infotainment screen look like a tablet that's just sitting there.

The engine bay pics are interesting. Appears to be the same EA888.3 engine, different coolant reservoir, different engine cover, single sided upper grill vent, and a manual hood strut. Call me crazy, but I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a hydraulic hood strut on a $30k+ car.

Honestly, it just looks like they took a MK7.5 and swapped out the seats, dash, body panels, and a few other things. Seems kind of wasteful IMO when the MK7.5 is only a couple of years old.

like most of the interior - seats are cool shape compared to current but we all see how euro always gets the cool seats, then we get shafted. Steering wheels not that nice looking. Would do a front end swap with a 7.5 and be ok with it

Under the skin this is pretty much the same car as the Mk7/7.5, hence the mostly identical dimensions etc, another little giveaway is the fact the lower ball mount for the hydraulic hood strut is still there in the same place, think of it as a very heavily face lifted mk7 in very much the same way the mk6 was a mk5 underneath!

Apart from simply knowing this to be the case, see this video at 2:39,

It’s worth noting that these cars (GTE GTD GTI) in the autogefuhl video are described by VW to be pre production prototypes, this may just be legal jargon, but it may also indicate that there may be slight differences in appearance when actually launched at Geneva.

Update, front end is so so. I would of like to see round headlights a la MK2

Every time new pictures come out I probably spend more time looking at them than I need to. I guess I'm still trying to figure out if I like it or not. There's still too much I think I don't like about it. I like the shape of the front half of the car, but the amount of honeycomb on the bumper is way too much and the holes are way too big. That gives it kind of a chintzy look to it. All my attention goes to the cheap plastic and the massive dead space behind it. The bottom half of the rear end sits too high or it's too tall and there's really not much that I like about it. It's also weird how even the back bumper has an eyebrow. Most of my problems with it are just with the bumpers, but that messes up the whole car for me.
