MK7... Restoration? High Mileage Rebuild

Picked up this 2015 MK7 today. After wrecking my previous GTI 2 years ago now, I'd never quite gotten the car out of my system. While browsing marketplace I stumbled upon perhaps the cheapest non wrecked GTI ever. Loaded it onto a trailer and got to work.

The car is a 2015 6MT Autobahn with 255,000 miles and in 100% stock form. The seller claimed bad head gasket and the car would not start.

Upon initial testing with a fresh battery, there seems to be an ECU issue. I'm getting the error message "keyless Access Faulty, along with every.single.light. on the dash lit up. The car will go into accessory mode and give me the usual engine whirring noises, but will not attempt to start.

The oil is milky and full of water. Looking to either tear down & rebuild this motor, or swap in a lower mileage unit from a wrecked car. Either way, it's got to come out, and I'm expecting to rebuild or replace the trans as well.

The body & interior are in excellent shape, so the plan is to get it sorted and leave as stock as possible. Feels great to have something to work on again. Will keep this thread updated with it's progress.

Sounds like a fun project! If you're going to rebuild the motor though, might as well use some upgraded internals and toss a decently sized snail on it;)

Likely looking for a salvage donor car for the engine/trans. Chased HP on my last car. Might keep the motor in this car for a build though just for fun.

Spent some time after work today getting the front end torn down. Lots of oil in the charge pipes. Pulled the plugs and scoped the cylinders- Oil and debris throughout. On the lookout for a new drivetrain.

Parts car went for $1500 over what I wanted to spend, so decided to tear down the original engine to scope out a rebuild.

Unfortunately, not only was the #1 cylinder full of coolant, but the #4 piston had melted right through!

The cylinder walls are moderately scored, but I haven't found any chunks yet. Cams look alright. Lots of sludge in the oil pan.

No real updates - was on vacation around the new year.

No luck with an affordable parts car. I did pick up a clutch for the build, and have a line on a motor to possibly swap in (would have to refresh trans)
