MK7 R Heavy Steering

Hey guys, i have been having an issue with my steering on my golf R so it basically gets extremely heavy at times and a bit twitchy i am 100% sure it is not an alignment, tire etc..

Whenever i get this really heavy steering mode its like the car lost connection to the power steering, if i stop and turn the car off and back on again the issue goes away, it tends to have a mind of its own :)

i am at 160,000 KM or 100,000 Miles , which i should not be complaining about when i have issues but the car has been super reliable except for this issue.

Unfortunately the dealer cannot figure out the issue so i would have to depend on myself to repair it. i was thinking of buying a used electric steering rack and seeing if the issue goes away.

Thanks!

Is there any chance it is an electronic failure in the lane-assist function ?

I know my steering sometimes goes heavy (it feels like I'm fighting the wheel) when 2 lines merge into one and the lane assist function notices I'm not midway between the white lines (because I just came from one lane).

If this stayed "active" instead of switching off like it should once you are in the centre of your lane it might give those symptoms.

My car does not have the lain-assist function

Any luck with this? I am having this exact issue. I have lane assist, however.

I have this issue too. Happens about 30 mins into a drive. I thought it might be something to do with running the VAQ in Increased traction mode. Or the smaller battery I’m running. I only got my replacement OBD11 today so I’m going to try and see if I can see any fault codes.

Did you ever get any codes? My issue only happened once and went away with turn the car off then back on. Hasn’t happened since my previous post above.

So I finally did a scan today.
There was a steering angle sensor error “voltage too low”. Last error was the day before I put my original battery back. I still haven’t had a reoccurrence since.
So I recommend changing your battery.

Hi there!

Yes you are right i do have an aftermarket battery which i think is smaller, i am heading to the vw dealer to buy a new one and swap it over. fingers crossed!

Yep I'm pretty positive that's the issue. Either smaller battery like both of us, or battery is getting old and needs replacing.

I'm going to buy a full size Lithium instead. Even lighter and should last a really long time.
