Wow, what a mess - this car certainly has a very, very DTC rich SCAN report!

Yes, the lighting system on this car does indeed have a problem with the "connection between module 4b and the lamps"!

I assume that the modules 29, 39, D6 and D7 are properly registered in the Gateway Installation List (I have no idea about the status of the 5E module - does this car even have this module installed?). And do your new Headlight fittings use the 29 & 39 modules?

The fact that the 4B module is reported on the SCAN means that the Extended CAN bus is working - but the "cannot be reached " errors on both left-side and right-side lighting modules suggests that the AFS CAN bus is not operating. It's not clear why - maybe one of the missing modules is shorting the CAN bus (I'm guessing, of course).

My sense is that there are both coding and wiring problems with the lighting modules on this car - I suggest that you concentrate on the latter first. Check CAN wires for correct polarity on the AFS modules and measure voltage on the power-supply pin(s) - meaning the "KL 15a" pins on my 8IT wiring diagram above.

Hi, apologies for being a noob and asking noob questions, but I just need some help and assurance before I start ordering things.
I have a mk7 with "bi-xenons" and AFS and cornering lights, either a servo steering the xenon beam and/or diagonal halogen lights depending on speed.
I take it that my job will be easier than what AWD4416 did.
I take it that I already have an AFS and 4B module.
Just to get a general idea, you reckon I will need "just" the headlights themselves, some wiring adjustments and a bit coding to get 8IU led headlights installed and working?
Any particular heads-up that you may want to share with me?

Indeed, I just received my VCDS and did that - I should have also read the initial instructions better!
Since I don't have the 4B module, should I be opting to get a particular version of it from a particular car - or would I be OK with just about any used 4B module?
Note that I read something about flashing it... I will not be able to do that.
Also, would I need an updated (from mk7.5) BCM?

Yes indeed - I suspect that lots of "countless databus errors" are the consequential result of just a few other key DTCs.

@Franswa: accepting @git443 excellent recommendation as a prudent way forward for this car - maybe focus in the first instance on the Fault-priority: 2 DTCs in your SCAN report

I'm currently stuck with the same problem as you, I'm getting some data record invalid issues.

edit to add more info: I’m having a problem with the 4B module, it’s currently giving me a “Data set RTM not valid” fault code (among many other “RTM” related ones) which when I search that on google there are essentially zero results 😀 🔫 the 29,39,D6,D7 modules just have one error code each which is: high beam variant implausible.

It may have been a bad idea to update my 4B module... I went from 0286 to 0367 and that wiped all the coding and adaptations, and maybe it wiped some more stuff too that the parameters aren’t filling back in. ugh..


everything has been resolved - i just need to check the adaptations more closely. "RTM_DTC" and "RTM_data_set" need to be set to not activated.

Hey 2018gti and anyone else who can help,

I got a couple of questions for you about your retrofit since it seems that you had some of the same issues that I am having. I read through this whole forum but I couldn’t find the exact information I was looking for.

Just to note I have a VCP with an active subscription, and all my modules, to my knowledge, have the correct software and firmware
  • We’re you ever able to find how to change the head lamp variant under the headlamp modules? Mine currently said e076 and e077.
  • How did you clear the “high beam implausible” error for D6 and D7? Does that have to do with the headlamp variant?
I have some more questions, but they are less directed at 2018gti directly.
  • For my control modules 29 and 39 I have 3 errors:
  1. data set implausible
  2. Supply voltage too low
    • I am confused by this one since I checked the voltage and it is getting 12 volts
    • Because of this low voltage I cannot flash firmware
  3. Terminal 15 implausible signal
  • My last question has to do with the correct flash files which I downloaded from VCP, I just want to make sure I was using the correct ones.
    • 7P5941572A_golfE_ D6_left 8IU_STANDARD flash
    • 7P5941572A_golfE_D7_right_8IU_STANDARD.flash
    • 8V0907399D_BIU_STANDARD_LCM_29.flash (if I could flash but voltage error)
    • 8V0907399D_BIU_STANDARD_LCM_39.flash (if I could flash but voltage error)
    • 4B I did not flash yet since I got it directly from a 2019 GTI
Any and all help on these issues would be appreciated! Everything up until this part has gone very smooth. I made this account and post in a rush (clearly with my username haha) so let me know if i need to provide some more info for people.

hmm........ remote diagnostics on forums like this is very hit-and-miss even when the best information is provided by the post author - relying on short snippets of SCAN reports ain't a good idea!! No offense intended.

So based ONLY on your words (which means I'm really guessing) - maybe consider the following:
  1. Dataset implausible - clearly the 29/39 modules do not like the dataset/parameter-set version - it means that either the file versions are wrong, or the download to the modules was incomplete!! Also, if you haven't installed the correct dataset into the 4B module - maybe this has caused the "implausible" error in the slave modules?
  2. Supply voltage low - J667/J668 has just the 2 x power-supply pins (see OP's wiring diagram that I copied in my post at the top of this thread-page. My hunch is that this error may be connected to the KL 15 error
  3. Terminal 15 implausible signal - is this the ONLY T15 error on this car? If not, check the J329 relay - does it "click" with ignition-ON? If ONLY J667/J668 modules have the T15 error, check the voltage on pin #4/pin #8 on the 14 x pin connector. Is the voltage battery volts and do the volts disappear with ignition-OFF. If so, check the integrity of the earth connections on pin #5 & pin #7
  4. “high beam implausible” error for D6 and D7 - can't comment because there simply ain't enuff information! What are the errors (if any) on D6 and D7? Likely this error will not clear until the 29/39 errors are fixed and D6/D7 are otherwise error free
Maybe also consider starting again and post-up a copy of a FULL, unedited (meaning NO changes) SCAN report for this car as an attachment (don't dump the SCAN contents directly into your post). I'm sure that future replies will be much better informed if we can see how this car was factory built and we can see the Freeze-frame data that has been ommitted from the error information

Hey DV52,

Thank you for the quick response. This is my first retrofit so sorry if my original post was lacking needed details. Also I’m hoping I didn’t botch all the work I have done, which is completely possible. I attached the OBDeleven scan log (Edit: Added VCP scan), let me know if you need a different log.

I will do my best to respond to your responses above:

  1. I have not been able to change the data set on the modules due to the voltage being too low. As for the 4B that is a fair point, it did not have the exact same software that the AW used. Pardon me if this is an uninformed question, but can the incorrect software on the 4B result in the voltage error?
  2. The two power pins are transferring voltage to the headlights and modules.
  3. The terminal 15 errors on 29 and 39 are the only ones I could see. The volts do disappear when the ignition is off. Pins 5 and 7 do seem to be grounded / earthed correctly. This is probably important to mention, instead of splicing up the original 10 pin connector, in case I messed it up. I actually used the 10 to 14 pin adapter, so the grounds 5 and 7 are adapted to the original ground.
  4. The high beam error was the only error so I am hoping once I figure out 29 and 39 those will properly clear.
My knowledge in retrofitting is not the best so I really appreciate the help on this.

@Headlights: Arrh......... that's much better - actual specific information ALWAYS provides clarity!! Thanks for the extra data.

So, please correct me if I'm wrong, but as I now understand from your latest post - this is the set-up:
  1. this "Yankee" car was factory built with Halogen headlight fittings (hence the "original 10 x pin headlight connectors").
  2. New headlight fittings (that have 14 x pin connectors) have been installed. These headlights are true OEM (meaning the new fittings are NOT manufactured by a third-party and advertised as "OEM")
  3. A new 4B (Multifunction Module} has been installed into the car and the factory wiring loom has been suitably modified for the new J745 module.
OK, I note that the new J745 is a 3Q0-series module and this car has been built on a 5Q0-series chassis. I can't comment on the suitability of this arrangement - hopefully, someone else is better placed to advise?

I'm intrigued by your words "I actually used the 10 to 14 pin adapter". The adaptor/harness is usually purpose built to suit a particular non OEM manufaturer's headlights. Cleary by design, the adaptor is expecting true OEM pin positions from the factory wires that terminate on the original 10 x pin connector. How did you manage this requirement given that you must have re-purposed the pin positions on the 10 x pin connector to accomodate the new headlights

Also, the Central eectrics module on your SCAN is complaining about the DRLs - how did your manage the DRLs on this retrofit project?
