Thought 791 is for ROW and 891 is for NAR.
and A&B is different hardware.
You are correct regarding ROW and NAR. But that difference is a hardware one. Where the ROW part has (P) instead of the word "PARK" for the parking brake.

A and B is different software.

There are a few different hardware variations but that seems to have just happened over time, different revisions. But the important thing is the software. On a new unit, hardware and software number will probably match.

It's a somewhat, but not 100% safe assumption that you can upgrade software from A to B. I did, so I have 791A hardware but now software 791B. It's probably not safe to downgrade from B software to A on 791/891B hardware though... Not that I can think of a reason anybody would be trying to go backwards.

So If my car is older, let's say a 2016, there is no reason to buy the 791B right?

Yeah the 2018 in NA doesn't have any of those things, they were all removed from the facelift models. I'll try and source down the 791B then, I don't care much about the symbols vs the words since I know what they mean.

ETA: Seems like the 791B is about $200 cheaper than the 891B. I'll go that route I think.
how much are you seeing the 891B for? the place i got mine is now $1300 but it was like $11xx 8 months ago. looking at old posts when I was doing research, it was like $700-800 before 2020.

In my opinion he would be 100% safe with the 791A.

Unless you plan on installing the MK8 steering wheel and want that sweet "View" button to work 😬.
Is this the answer to being able to have zoom controls with maps on the AID? That chat on the topic you had last year with FlorentDB looked like it kinda fizzled out?

@madwazzabi My arrows still don't zoom in/out 😭. Although I'm wondering if it has to do with MFSW button coding, which has no defined description when using ODIS or long coding helper in VCDS.

Ah that's unfortunate. I think zoom level of the AID maps is a gazillion times better function than listing destination history. I would jump on an AID upgrade just on that. On a similar vein, on the standard MFD, if the compass mode could simply list each upcoming perpendicular street you are approaching would make the NAV screen on the MFD that much more useful.

Yea... as with every other project, at some point I'll go through and try the various bit combinations. I know what some of them do but several of them seem to have a "paired bit" so two changes are required to get what you want. Means it's going to quite tedious. The lack of any Mk7s with these buttons and AID means no reference scans, although I have found scans some of other factory AID equipped vehicles with these buttons so that's a place to sort of start.

Cross streets would be really nice. Before I had driving modes it showed me the current street on the top of the screen, which was occasionally useful. Of course now only Android Auto lives on the screen.

Will the old cluster still work after the cockpit has been installed?

it will probably need some programming to swap back and definitely if you are selling it to someone to reuse. They wont be able to change the mileage

Yep, after the cockpit is matched with ODIS to my car.
I'm not 100% sure on that. Your original cluster may no longer be an "expected" part when your gateway goes through the installed list for component protection. I would suspect immo remains paired.

Out of curiosity, why would you be re-installing/switching in the old cluster?

Yea that makes sense.

If the process of mileage correction will take a long time i can just install the old cluster in the meantime and use the car, don't want to have the car grounded for days.

That's why you do what I have done... leave the trim out and you can pull the dash in a couple minutes, 2 screws and the connector. Then you can run the mileage up everynight while you sleep.

Full disclosure, my trim is removed... but I haven't got setup to work yet, still 🤦‍♂️.
