Misuse of Word?

I keep seeing the use of the word "further" when referring to distance. I always thought you should use "farther". An VW ad popped up on my PC that more or less read, go further in the I.D. 4, mentioning it's 250 mile range. I also hear TV narrators/hosts use further when talking about distances. Has it become acceptable just because it sounds better?

Why it’s becoming this way, i can’t speak to that. But yes you’re correct. Farther should be physical distance. Further is metaphorical. Maybe VW was trying to use it as a double entendre.

I thought they were interchangeable but the English language is not my strong suit.
