Mostly. In the early 90's, I closed down a base in Germany and handed the keys over to the German government. That one was originally a German quartermaster base and the basement had been closed off since the mid-40's. In that basement were about 20 different vehicles from Mercedes staff cars to SteyrPuch trucks to Kübelwagen. All of the Kübelwagen had an old coolant stain on the cement floor.

And yes, I turned them all over to the German govt - although I was tempted.... Most of them ended up here.

Must have been since plastic was invented many years before the Golf existed. He certainly meant before VW started to use plastic for the thermostat housing.
VW has had leaky thermostats long before the Golf. There were two versions of the Kübelwagen - one air cooled and one water cooled. The water cooled one is the one that peed all over the garage floor in the 40's.
