My car (a 2015) had a broken valve spring some two and a half years ago.
The local dealer I had it towed to (not my usual dealer) had it for a week or two and couldn't even figure out what was wrong with it.
I had it towed out of there to a VW/Porsche/Audi specialty shop that found the problem.
I had a jb1 on it at the time, but have no idea of that had anything to do with it.
In any event, I had them remove the jb1 when they performed the work.
You took your car to the dealer with the Jb1 installed? Takes about 10 minutes to unhook, if you take a coffee break. The value of these piggyback units is that they are easily removed prior to visiting the VW dealer, retaining your warranty, but I guess your ‘15 passed its warranty long ago as mine did.

I was stranded on the side of the road at night.
I was in no position to unhook those harnesses - particularly the one down on the bottom.
And yes, you're correct - I was out of warranty.

OP: it seems weird that you had a valve spring going bad with no symptoms. Glad it’s all sorted now though.

I don't disagree but I also have literally zero experience with mechanical failures whatsoever. What symptoms of a valve failure would be present? It had a really rough idle, but other than that there was never any issues with the car. Not even so much as a CEL ever.

Rough idle would be one of the symptoms. That could also be caused be carbon build up. Hard to say. Yeah sometimes you just have to trust the shop and say “if you say so” because it’s hard to know if they’re right or wrong. It’s def plausible.

Found this thread, this guy had nearly identical symptoms his entire engine failed though.
My car's symptoms were very similar to the above.
I was at a light, making a left to cross an intersection - the car revved but went nowhere - shuddered, threw cel's, and sputtered across the intersection which fortunately had an empty lot beside a deli that was closed for the evening that I was able to roll into. A relatively rural part of town.
The symptoms were very close to what happened to the car when a coil pack failed once, so I was hoping it was something as simple as that.
I tried restarting it a couple of times, but it wouldn't turn over.

A broken valve spring could cause the valve to not close 100%, and run rough. but that would be on the most ideal situation.. if the valve drops down further into the cylinder head (because the spring is not holding it shut), it could smack the piston, break off, and get munched up inside the cylinder causing lots of bad things. sounds like OP got really lucky on the possible scenarios of a broken valve spring.

still won't say which shop you went to? why are you protecting a shop that is scamming you?

you're doing a disservice to the community by not telling us which shop to avoid.
