What was disappointing about the R?
I didn't like power delivery mostly. Seems like it had more turbo lag (probably because of the larger turbo). The power just falls off between gears when your just driving normally. I know this happens in the GTI too, but it just isn't as noticeable.
Also, I had wheel hop in the rear when the roads were wet. Clutch started to slip at 15k miles. The electronic parking brake was annoying. It just didn't feel as "toss able" or lively. Fuel economy was about 8-10 mpg less. The factory 19" wheels were annoying on rough roads. The drivers assist features bothered me, sometimes slamming on the brakes for no reason or nugging the wheel around to keep you in your lane.
That"s most of what I can remember right now. The car was quick and looked great, but it just didn't work for me as daily. I really think a dsg R would have been a better car but I love manuals.
