2024 bump to ask those of you with the Motegi MR146 17x8.5 ET42. I read that they "barely" clear the PP / R brakes, but what kind of gap are we talking about here? 2mm? 8mm?

Nobody will care because these wheels are discontinued now, but anyway the narrowest gap is a bit over 4mm, near the center of the caliper, near the outer edge. Going further inboard the clearance is better because the diameter of the barrel also gets larger.

Out of curiosity are those BRAND NEW brake pads? Because that WILL make a difference if they're not, and you go to replace them you will find the caliper closer to the wheel. They look pretty clean in the photo but have to know for sure... hah.

I use Konig Rennforms as summer wheels and they are 18x8 +45 and come in at 18.4 lbs according to Konig. A little lighter and cheaper than the ProTracks, more expensive than the Sparco's.

They're a pain to clean but I think they look great.
You're right about the cleaning. And there's no decent brush so end up using a mit and digging fingers into all the nooks and crannies

Did the 'right thing' over 3 years ago by replacing my Golf's original handsome but heavy and hard to clean Linas 16x6.5 alloys with 17% lighter 16x7 Bini Revolites. Today have sacrificed some great efficiency for hopefully better form by fitting these M-B 'forged' 16x7 items, but on sporty-biased 'summer' 215/55 Kumhos this time. On this tyre they weigh-in at 16.6kg each, almost 1.5kg heavier than the Revolites :( - but at least still over 1.6kg lighter than the narrower Linas were.

new, but the clearance issues are radial, not axial

how do you order protrack? they want some vehicle identifiers I've never heard of, and certainly don't have. I would love a set, but I'm not sure they can beat the warranty from neuspeed/apex.
I had emailed them a while back because I wanted to order a set. I got a pretty quick reply from the CEO who told me there's no distributor in the US, and that he had tried in the past to ship direct with DHL and had issues with it so wouldn't do it again. Kind of a shame, because I think they look awesome and see them being run on lots of the crazy MQB and BMW Nurburgring builds, really would love to grab a set.

18x8 +50 Wheels, sourced from Japan, killer exchange rate right now. They were pretty trashed but got them here for like $1100? Powdercoater striped and coated them to match my TE37s that are on my S2000 for $600 and they look brand new, not a single chip or bit of rash. They're 2006 production wheels and one of them only needed a single wheel weight, gotta love forged aluminum.

+13mm/18mm spacers from 42DD, they're adaptor spacers for 73.1mm to 57.1mm so no need to run centering rings.

235/40/18 DWS 06+, I was really tempted to go for summers but I like the flexibility of an all season for my daily.

Here are my new wheels. Enkei TFR 18X8 ET45 in Copper. Weight is right on what Tirerack had them at. 18.85lbs on Tirerack vs 19lbs weighed. So right there weight wise. Looking forward to getting them on. Never had a set of aftermarket wheels so I am pretty excited! Having to slow myself down so I can ceramic coat them and take the time for them to cure correctly before putting them on.

The copper on those is one of my favorite wheel colors. I think I’m going for that shade when it’s time to refinish my bronze Neuspeeds.
