Lets talk mounting splitters

Hey all,

A while ago i came up with the grand idea to retrofit a rep Rocket Bunny V1 splitter intended for an FRS to my GTI and I was pretty happy with the look

The only issue was it was constantly getting pulled off, as if it was generating downforce and couldn't cope. First it was pulling screws through the underside of the bumper then it began shaking the bumper to the point of destroying the lower grill and slightly deforming the bumper

After this I fixed my bumper and tossed the splitter in the corner of the garage to revisit, and now I'm revisiting! I initially thought chassis mounting was the way to go, but besides the work required for that it seems excessive given that it's not all that big.

My current idea is to put spacers between the splitter and the bumper so there is enough gap for air to pass through in hopes that will eliminate the air trying to rip it off the car. My though is air is getting stalled in the spot where the arrow is with no place to go, causing the problems.
Has anyone attempted this before or have any insight on to whether or not I'm onto something? I want to make sure I'm on the right path before I potential ruin anotehr lower bumper grill lol

Dumb thought, but isn't air moving over/"through" precisely what downforce is? The Aerofabb front splitter uses a large brace on the inner/topside of the bumper and washers, and mine has held up to reasonably high speeds (in a closed environment, of course)

Could you emulate that with maybe a piece to spread the weight out and some wide washers?

A brace would be a good idea- I did have some big washers at one point, but that just made the weak point the lower bumper grill. Perhaps the combination of the spacers, brace, and washers is the ticket

Chassis mounted splitters are the way. Anything else is wrong.
For functional aero I agree 100%, but I'm just trying to look like a hot boi with my eBay RocketBunny rep 😅
