Wait, is it still based on the S197 chassis?

Well, as grambles and I discussed earlier, there are ways to decrease weight in the platform without necessarily decreasing size or using lightweight materials.

My concern is though, even if they did manage to shed weight from it, it's still a massive car physically.

If they are able to dramatically improve the new design in almost every way without adding any weight, that's definately an accomplishment for a car in this class.

It is still a big car for what it does, but at least this one's easier to see out of than the chopped top whale Camaro.

Not going to happen in a mustang... They claim aluminum fenders and some other crap but that will yield 10-20 lbs tops, and additional tech/features will likely make it heavier, also IRS may actually be heavier.

Is the IRS worth a slight weight penalty while keeping the car within a sane price range?

Absolutely.

Hope they kept mounting points for a live axle because them drag racers ain't gonna be happy.

Looks that way, same wheel base... same general dimension.

crap, I thought the inside looked too much like my 2013. The s197 is a good chassis. So its good and bad for the car. Bad because while its good...its almost a decade old. Good....because lots of the same bits will fit and maybe the IRS will be backwards compatable ALA the svt's of old....

This whole IRS thing is just a bunch of hype, the live axle was fine as well. The car handled just fine. It is an improvement if you want to autocross or whatnot.

That said, I am disappointed that they didn't make the car smaller/lighter, and add better transmissions/engines.

It should have been
2.3 Turbo
3.5TT
5.0/5.4

Not gay ass V6 from 10 years ago, 2.3 turbo with the same power, and 5.0 carryover.

This. I would have been impressed if they pulled this off.

The V6 is from 2007, developed in 2006.
The V8 design is a bit older, its basically a larger mod motor, developed in 2001. The 5.0 version is from 2010 though. However, supposedly there are a few upgrades this time around for the 5.0, including oil cooler, new camshafts, and ported manifolds.

I don't see the need to completely change the engine lineup. The V6 gets good mileage and makes good, competitive power. The 5.0 has constantly been praised as an excellent, very powerful engine. And probably underrated from the factory. Adding the 2.3 turbo was an interesting move to help it appeal to the overseas customers.

The Chevy LS series was designed in 1997! The Vortech engines 1996! They have to stretch the engines that long to make them profitable. They probably amortized the costs over 10 years or so. The engines are shared with the trucks in order to do this.

The carry over transmissions are a bit of a drag though. Especially given the 6 MT's durability issues. And the fact that the 6 AT is based on really old technology.

The whole idea of the Mustang (and Camaro) is cheap speed though. If they added turbochargers, start/stop, cylinder deactivation, plastic water pumps, and electric everything sure they could squeeze a few MPGs out, but at a significantly increased cost. What car, new, can touch a Mustang or Camaro's performance level for $35k out of the box?

I take it you have never driven a track that had a slight bump on a corner in a live axle car.

No matter how well the suspension is tamed, it always upsets the rear end and makes handling a bit spooky on a fast track. A live axle is fine for road racing or autoX if the surface glass smooth. Otherwise, IRS all the way.

This.

The live axle was fine MOST of the time, but when you got on less than ideal pavement on max hoon...it got sketchy.

Still, Ford really Honda'd the solid rear axle.

Ford refined it as far as possible. It had to in order for 660hp to make it to the ground without making the car impossible to drive on a track and spinning in every corner.
