Is it worth changing the PCV valve as general maintenance?

That was true, when PCV valves looked like this:



They are not serviceable any more.

There is no service interval. If you have excessive oil consumption or whistling you may want to replace you PCV valve. I perform as preventative maintenance as failure will over pressurize engine resulting in oil leaks such as rear main seal. Just finished replacing on GTI after seeing this thread, it is easy, fairly inexpensive ($90 OEM if you shop it). On my BMW (also no service interval) which is naturally aspirated I replaced at 125K miles ($330 for parts and challenging job) on my GTI which is stage 2 tuned I replaced at 64K miles. For the PCV valve pictured above they can be easily tested as if they don't rattle when the are shook they are frozen but for under $10 like on my 97 Civic I just replace.
