I use Castrol Titanium Edge 0w40..& there are two versions to look out for...

A3/B4 which is to VW 502 00 & 505 00 (I use this as my engine is an early one & requires oil to 502 spec)

There are also other versions such as "R" to RN17 RSA.....& there were previous version to newer VW spec but I can't find them ATM...

Castrol 5W40 Euro/whatever isn't anything special. A basic VW502 00 oil that is mainly Group 3 base stock (hydrocracked). Not bad, but nothing special. The 0W oils like the 0W40 M1 or Castrol use higher-quality base stocks (Group 3 and 4 - 4 is more true "synthetic" and is PAO) to get that range in the cold/hot viscosity. The 0W30 and 0W40 "Belgian" Castrol are v. good oils. In some Euro countries, what is called a synthetic here cannot be called that if it is primarily Group 3 base so Liquimoly Leichtlauf High Tech 5W40, Castrol 5W40, etc. would fall into the bucket.
