Instrument lighting in side light position

If anyone with a NAR model has an interest to pursue this matter, it's just a matter of looking for different settings between the two countries and experimenting (I think). I've "greyed-out" the settings that are the same for all vehicles - so there aren't that many channels remaining to choose-from. Might be a handy tweak instruction that someone here can develop for use by forum colleagues that are American mk7 owners!

Okay, I want to take this on. I have a Canadian (NAR) MY2016 car that exhibits the same behaviour. At full brightness, I think the LEDs are both functional and beautiful at dusk and dawn. I want to be able to run them without losing my cluster.

Should I start by running an adaptation map on the module? Then start changing over the channels one by one to ROW settings to see what happens? What about channels that deal with instrument cluster illumination?

DCM: hi. I have been discussing this very issue on vwvortex (see link below). Suggest you read the posts before you proceed -looks more complicated than I first thought

Can anyone tell me if when they turn their light switch to side lights whether or not the dash lighting (Spedo and rev counter) come on? If I turn mine to the side light position the interior lighting comes on but the dials don't light up, if I turn it to side lights and pull it out for fog lights everything lights up as you would expect. It just doesn't work for side lights. Also the side lights don't seem to dim in sidelight mode, they stay at full DRL brightness but the single marker LED does come on. Not sure if it's something i've done as i've have made some VCDS changes or if it's supposed to do this. I can't remeber if this worked before I made the VCDS changes. Any help would be appreciated.

Hey Macker87, took a 2016 GTI only a couple of weeks ago here in the Middle East (manufactured in Germany). I have the same problem wherein when it is in Parking Light mode, the speedo does not light up, only the other dash lights. But I noticed the below behaviour,

When in Parking Light Mode, if I turn on the Foglights, the speedo lights turn on and the DRL dims down to low brightness. (visually inspect it from outside)
When in Parking Light Mode, if I turn off the Foglights, the speedo lights turn off and the DRL goes into daylight brightness.

I assumed that this is a safety/reminder feature to tell you that the light isn't sufficient for safe driving at night/evening. Turn on either foglights/low beam at it will be resolved. Do test it out !

One of the few advantages of modern cars is that many of them sort out your lights for you.
I just leave mine permanently in Auto mode. Job done.

Thanks everyone for the replies, i'm glad it's not just me who finds this annoying. NiranjGTI, yes I also noticed this behaviour and use it as a temporary work arround. I still don't see why if in the parking light position the spedo only lights up when fog lights are on and not for both. Hopefully someone can figure this out and it ends up being a simple fix with vcds

Has anyone worked out how to solve this yet?

Hi All,

I'll try and keep this brief but unfortunately I tend to waffle on a bit trying to give as many clear details as possible about what I'm trying to say! I apologise in advance!

I have been bothered by this problem myself on the last 3 MK7 Golfs I have owned - a 2015 GTD manual, a 2014 R and my current car a 2016 GTD DSG.

I never tried to apply the Y curve work around to my 2015 GTD but I did apply it to the 2014 Golf R that I had. I have to admit that it worked pretty well and was definitely better than not having any dash illumination at all with the light switch in the "Side Light" position.

When I tried to apply the Y curve mod to my 2016 GTD the Cent Elec module would not let me alter the Y curve values, even though the module accepted the security access code. This pi**ed me off immensely!

I was going to just unplug the lead and settle with the fact that I would either have to wait for a working access code to be found or just never have dial illumination on this car with the light switch in Side Light position.

I don't even know why I did what I did but I decided to look through the available options in the "Instruments" control module Adaptions (module 17 if I remember correctly). I picked through them one at a time (there's nowhere near as many as is in the Cent Elec control module) and somewhere near the bottom of the list I spied a line of text something like "Dimming Curve Algorithm". I double clicked on this to reveal that there were 3 different options available:

"Side Lights" (This was the current setting for my car)

"Not Active"

"lds"

I assumed that I would need to select the "Not Active" option but when I did so I received the error message "Out Of Range". I obviously couldn't leave it there so I tried the "lds" option. It worked a treat! As soon as the controller had accepted the request I switched the light switch to the Side Light position and hey presto the dials lit up with full illumination. I only applied this mod 2 days ago but have tried it numerous times in all sorts of lighting conditions at different times of the day and night - it worked exactly the same regardless of ambient light level.

I can only assume that "lds" perhaps means Light Dependent Sensor or maybe Light Dependent Switch, I honestly don't know. To me, logic would dictate that the option of "Not Active" would be the one I needed so that the dimming curve algorithm wouldn't be included in the dial illumination at all - The German designers clearly had other ideas of what makes sense to them! Ha!

If I've read all the other forums and posts correctly, I'm thinking that this problem is isolated to the NAR and European market vehicles? I think Mr DV52 posted a photo of his dash dials lit while the switch was in the Side Light (Park Light) position? Are Australian VW models not affected at all by this issue?

Hope this is of use to someone. It's about the only one or nearly the only tweak I've found with VCDS that I haven't had to read on a forum.

Happy motoring.

Jon, you've figured it out! I know a lot of NAR 7R owners who will be extremely happy this is now working!

I've seen the (1)-Illumination_algorithm-Scale_switching_algorithm adaptation channel before, but never had any success with it. I think that was many months ago, before 25327 was revealed to be a partially-working SC for the 17 controller. (I say partially working because it still doesn't enable dimming curve adaptation changes.)

I never thought to try it again! Thank you!

I applied this change to my MY2016 NAR 7R:

Open controller [17-Instruments]
[Security Access-16] > Enter 25327
[Adaptation-10] > Change (1)-Illumination_algorithm-Scale_switching_algorithm from parking_light to lds

Now, my cluster illuminates in low ambient light for all headlight switch positions except OFF.

The cluster still follows the "on until dark" dimming curve in the OFF position. In addition, all switch positions remain on a dimming curve that increases cluster brightness in response to an increase in ambient light. (I tested the latter by shining a light on the sensor between the "7" and "8" on the tach.)

Thanks again!

Yes! I don't post here often but thanks so much for figuring this out!

Also, thanks to dmc for sharing this with us over at VWV.

Glad you guys have found this mod useful and I really appreciate you taking the time to write something on the forum letting me know. I'm as guilty as the next person for finding solutions on forum sites and not giving the provider any acknowledgement.

I can be quite a finicky person when it comes to even the most minor of niggles on the car I own so I usually do try my best to sort them out before they manage to spoil my enjoyment of the vehicle.

Thanks again.

Jon.

O I can't thank you enough!!! I noticed yesterday I was having a hard time reading the dash with my sunglasses on during a 100 degree beautiful sunny day here in the bay area. I had to turn the lights on just to get the dash to fully light up so I can easily read it. Now, it is always lit full brightness unless I switch to off which I never do since i have the Auto setting. :)

Don, yes i was aware of the transistor which controls the brightness. However in headlight mode the light level isfixed as far as i'm aware and adjusts when the lights are off. Also I haven't made any changes to the instrument control module and the coding matched from the original auto scan. So i'm guessing there must be something thats changed in centeral electrics?

Well, I wasn't.
