It's even possible the crate started to fall apart and the shipping company's just removed it. My long-block crate was starting to fall apart by the time it arrived. They usually take pictures of it boxed up before they drop it off.

I was wondering if that's what happened. I've seen freight companies do some dumb stuff when packaging gets damaged.

Weird. Seems like most get it in a crate. Maybe they’re trying to save some bucks. Keep us posted on how they handle this, I wonder how good their customer service is..
So far not all that helpful. They offered to send replacement parts but I rejected that, I don’t want to take apart a brand new engine and potentially give them that as an excuse to deny any support/warranty if something goes wrong after I run it the first time.

Gave them a deadline to come up with a reasonable solution (another motor or a refund), we’ll see if they comply otherwise an AliExpress dispute will be opened, CC company is last resort

I’d definitely open up the dispute sooner than later..especially if they did the same thing with me when they sent that brochure and started the countdown on the “dispute window” or whatever when that brochure was delivered.

Keep us posted please. Sorry you gotta deal with this shit ~ hopefully it all works out in your favor ~

maybe they saw you were already trying to post the engine on marketplace and kept disabling comments when people had questions about where this engine came from?
Oh brother, nobody had questions about where it came from and nothing I said in the post was wrong. I disabled comments because people love to ruin for sale posts.
I'm going to be stuck with the engine whether they refund me or not, so why wouldn't I already post it?

Has anyone bought one of these engines and opened it up to check internals or to build it altogether yet? If so, how were block (bore) and cylinder head (valve size) measurements? I’m looking for a motor myself and don’t know if to just drop one of these in (the “upgraded” one) or to open it up and build it. Thanks in advance.

Giving an update on my situation. Ended up getting half my money refunded, decided to repair the engine with the upper and lower oil pans off my old engine and got it all installed. Engine absolutely purs and is very smooth. Surprisingly the GTI’s tune did not mind the R head, but I did get my custom tuning modified for the R head to be safe. Only issue I am fighting right now is that now the car pulls hard to the right when I give it any amount of throttle and pulls hard to the left when I let off. Didn’t do it before the swap and I didn’t mess with steering or suspension during the swap so not sure why, it almost feels like the VAQ diff is completely freaking out and engaging all power to alternating sides, very weird almost not safe to drive, other than that everything is happy, no oil or coolant leaks. First oil change in a couple hundred miles.

EDIT: Pull fixed, LF strut mount was bad, probably from keeping the suspension hung for a couple months on a lift lol.

I opened mine up to check for internal damage because of the damage I had in shipping and everything looked good and in spec, the only thing that scared me was the oil pump was NOT genuine so I put a genuine one in to be safe.

Had to go through multiple issues on the items that attach to the block.

Oil cooler was one - bad gaskets and probably oil cooler as well, which was replaced. Drove fine for a minute.

Then the original OEM water pump made itself a nice little crack which grew to a hole with coolant squirting out of it, so I sourced an aftermarket one (only after JB water welding it, which worked but didn’t fix the issue because it was also leaking thru a blown waterpump gasket as well 😑).

So, if y’all buy one of these engines go ahead and replace all of that sh** that attaches to block and their gaskets and call it a day.
