Quick update:

Yesterday the engine threw a warning for low coolant out of nowhere on my way to re fuel, so I stopped and checked out the reservoir and sure enough I noticed a few small milky brown globs. Topped her off, and started right up completely fine as usual, without any noticeable smoke out the back. Drove the car home like my now deceased grandmother (r.i.p) would, and it did not overheat or throw the code.

I did an oil change later that evening after 3,300 mi (~7,000 miles total on the engine). Still looked alright, no coolant/water was drained on initial pour, however it did have that E85 smell to it. I need to send it out for analysis

This morning when checking the coolant and oil levels, I noticed a massive amount of oil in the coolant reservoir. I did start the car up again, which it did without issue, and gave it a few revs with the cap off and nothing came shooting out so that was somewhat re-assuring. There again was no suspicious white smoke out the back with the revs and while idling. I suspect/hope the oil cooler and its associated seals/gaskets/etc are no bueno. Could still be a head gasket issue so the car will be out of commission until I take a look at the oil cooler, and if that checks out completely fine, I'll have to do a leak down test :poop:

On another note, the other engine should be arriving this week :D

Did you replace the o rings on oil cooler ? I'm waiting for my o rings to show up think they are 15x2.5mm.

Also, a quick question, I know I should prefill oil on the turbo. But I remember someone also mentioning to pre fill oil on the vacuum pump as well… is that correct?

I’ve ordered a replacement oil cooler w/ new gaskets and also the plastic water pump-oil cooler connector..

When I first started the engine, I disconnected fuel and spark, and cranked the engine over several times to get oil flowing. Besides that I didn’t do any pre filling ~

So just to get a understanding. You said you have milky sludge. Is the first engine you ordered from China okay? Or was it it the oil cooler leaking?

Thanks for the heads-up. I do not know about the quality of the Chinese sold engine. That's what I'm really inquiring. Is it a deal or a waste?

I’ll be finding out today or tomorrow as soon as I can get the new stuff installed.. unlikely its a head gasket given the reasons above but I'll update as soon as I get it back up and running

its gonna be a pita trying to connect the oil cooler-water pump plastic connector piece..any advice for this with the intake manifold on? or should I just take it off and save the headache?

For those of you who may have to do an oil cooler/gasket replacement (and are not wanting to mess with the water pump or remove the IM), the best advice I can give you is to do it by removing the alternator and AC compressor like in the video below. HOWEVER to save yourself the headache of trying to wiggle the plastic oil cooler-water pump connector piece with the IM on, just unbolt all the hardware connecting the IM to the head so that it is free to move ever so slightly. With this extra movement of the IM it was MUCH (i.e on the first try) easier to slide the housing and make the connection between the oil cooler-water pump flush.
