In a bit of a pickle, could really use some other R owners input...

If a DAZA swap is even a possibility (their video said starting at $30k + a donor car), the cost difference between option 1 & 2 is negligible. Do whatever you believe will give you the most peace of mind.

I don't think I could drive something with that much uncertainty over the condition of the engine after being driven with no oil...so I'm pro any option that involves dumping the car

$13,240.09 with parts & labor. Not including alignment which isn't cheap due to lane assist.

yeah, that car looks great. Get the repairs done, and you have a brand-new motor in a car you like. Then you can build up the old engine for more boost, or just sell it for a little extra cash.

DAZA swap is $15k for labor and whatever it takes to get parts. Was at the shop a few weeks ago trying to get another mod done and started talking to the owner about it. They’ve pretty much got it down to a science at this point. Still would budget about $45-50k all in.

Have you thought about a DDKA/DPKA swap? VW builds 2.5T VR6s in Germany for the Chinese Atlas (aka Terramont/Talagon). Forged crank and aluminum block so it's probably not a total boat anchor.

Just throwing it out there in case you were unaware

1) would not assume the engine is usable. you ran the car without oil.

2) if your current car doesn't have a ton of work put into it, this is a good route. take all of the aftermarket stuff for the new car. who cares what the market is like, you're getting a clean title out of the deal.

3) RS3s are pretty cool. your money.

Financially, option 2 is the smartest. You get a clean title, don't have to put cash into replacing it. You gain close to 20k out of the deal, vs. putting more money into an Audi that will likely depreciate as the market continues to cool.

If you swap the car or just build a motor, you still have a salvage title. A salvage title, swapped car will be a pain in the ass to sell later on. And you will spend much more on the swap than you'd think. Keep in mind your old motor might be worthless, which is a big hit to the affordability of a swap.

No official ruling yet but sounds like insurance is going to go ahead with the engine replacement.

Makes sense if so considering the cost of these currently.

Engine is definitely toast the more I think about it. Obviously a big cloud of smoke at impact from the hot exhaust but that cleared up quickly until I had to drive up that monster driveway. It started smoking hard then before being shut off. Cylinders and rings are likely cooked.

Take the check and fix your R, then continue enjoying your dream R like you intended in the first place. You will be happy with that choice.

I just hope they do a good job with the new engine. Proper torque, proper assembly, replacing one time use hardware. More issues down the road or immediately after a new engine are common if a good mechanic doesn't work on the car. Luckily, most of these bigger jobs are done by more veteran techs. Hopefully the shop foreman oversees the job.

Take this time to order any parts that you want to swap in. Now would be a good time to do it. I'd also ask about which parts they are going to reuse. I'd replace some of the wearable parts if VW doesn't have it on their list. Engine & trans mounts, bushings, possibly axles, etc. If you are going to have a new engine, might as well have everything else new.

What about suspension? Since you put it into a ditch, did you have anything steering or suspension related fail? Car still drive straight? Any shaking or vibration?
