I have been using VW 502 0w40 Mobil1 1 for my 2015 GTI for years (57k miles)

Last year when I picked up my 2020 GTI I just assumed it was the same. So I bought 2 of everything and have been changing them both with 0w40 Mobile 1. Only this weekend when I was getting ready to do another round of changes did I notice the 503 spec M1 and they only had 5w40. So I looked into using that and finally saw my 2020 is asking for 508 0w20.

I put 0w40 in at 3k miles and 7k miles on the 2020. It runs fine. Wondering now if I should go for 0w20 or stick with 0w40.

Thoughts?

My only concern would be in unlikely case of engine problem if dealer or VW did not honor warranty based on technicality. May consider at next oil change going to 508 until you are beyond the power train warranty.

I work at a vw dealer and honestly I use 5w40 in my mk7.5 gti but when mk7s and mk7.5s come in the techs will use 0w20

This is why I bring my own oil to the dealer. My only concern is that the techs take the Motul 8100 for their own cars and then put the bulk 0W20 into my '18 GTI. :D

I hear you; I went to the dealer to buy oil for my 2019 GTI and they tried to sell me 502.00 5W40. Even after the parts person had my vin#.

I did a little research on this with a friend that has access to VW etka site. 19+ GTI/GLI/R use a different oil pump part number than 15-18 cars. Also the rod bearings have a different part number specific for 19+. Not sure that necessarily relates to the oil spec change but could be.

I just went off of what the manual says, and picked up LiquiMoly 0w20 Top Tec. Meets the spec, and it seems to be a good product. I wonder why the rod bearings changed for 19+, I'd love to be a fly on the wall for changes like these. But I guess we'll never know.
