How would you re-gear your car if you could?

Since I've had my 6 speed, I've probably used 5th a handful of times. Usually go straight from 4th to 6th and if I need to accelerate on the highway, no reason to shift into 5th, just go straight to 4th or even 3rd if speed. is low enough

And saves the clutch. No WOT below 3500 for me. My goal is 40,000 miles tuned. We'll see if I make it.

i barely even use 6th, I don’t shift to 6th till 60 at the very earliest, and that’s for perfectly flat roads with little to no variation in grade. If there’s any amount of uphill/downhill I just stay in 5th. Even at 75, 80, 6th is simply too tall. 5th is perfect and healthy though for all but the steepest inclines at speed. And it’s still overdrive so still get 30 mpg even at ~3K+ RPM.

It’s partially because my car is an Alltrack with the extra weight and 4Motion. I was much more comfortable using 6th in more scenarios in my last manual MK7 GTI. Same gearing.

As others have said, I'd raise 1st as 1-2 is much too soon making 1st seem useless to me. That would lead to a slight increase in 2 and 3 too. Overall it would make driveability around town a bit more pleasant. I had the same complaint in my 2005 Corvette. I was shifting right off the line and that just seemed way too quick. Golf R DSG seems the same to me.

A dream gear set for my 1.5 litre 6MT would have a slightly higher 1st/lower 2nd as most above have mentioned. As 4th/5th are quite close, I'd like 5th a little taller, but would then like my 6th to be a little-used purely motorway/autobahn stellar cruising gear, about 20% taller than it is now.

DSG. Slightly longer gears for 1 and 2. Too short for tuned power, and it would be nice to have another 5-10mph at the top of 2nd for autocross.

I would change 1st gear on my 6MT.. first is useless.. if i could Start in second gear i would.. second gear is okay but constantly shifting around town is kinda annoying. It’s like 3rd and 2nd are best buds. I wish 4th and fifth were a little more aggressive.. but meh.. the biggest thing is change is how loose the stock shifting is
