How would you re-gear your car if you could?

Rant about the gearing in your mk7 here. Please preface with which vehicle and transmission you have, and if possible share the ratios so people with other transmissions have some context.

GTI DSG7: 3.4, 2.75, 1.77, 0.92, 0.75, 0.7, 0.63, final drive 4.17. 6 and 7 are so close as to make 6 pointless, because they're both highway cruiser gears but the extra uphill torque afforded by downshifting to 6th is so insignificant that I always end up going down to 5th anyway. Delete 6th or use it to flesh out the 2-4 range so I have another fun gear.

I wish the jump between 3-4 in DSG wasn’t so massive. 4th goes from like 80-120. If 3rd went to like 90 at 6000rpm it’d be perfect.

6 speed manual on the Golf R... I think its one of the shortest gearing for this platform...?

3.36 / 2.09 / 1.48 / 1.09 / 1.10 / 0.91

(Final 1st to 4th: 4.24, Final 5th and 6th: 3.27)

Does about 3,100 rpm at 80mph... 5th and 6th are a bit close, I guess the highway gear could be taller....

edit: Or they could have made 1st to 5th a bit shorter and left 6th as it is.... 180 mph @ 7,000 rpm is perfect.

I have a 6MT Alltrack which has same ratios as a GTI. Only my car comes with 170HP/184TQ from the factory so those super tall gears make the car an absolute dog without a tune. I got the APR Plus tune which definitely helped by bringing my power levels up to stock GTI power (210AWHP/255AWTQ), but I miss the gearing from my first manual car, a 2012 MK6 GTI. Those cars had super short-ratio gears, 6th spun 2700 @ 65Mph. my Current car spins like 1900/2K flat @ 65.

The MK7 Golf R has the shortest ratios available of any MK7 Golf, in both DSG and 6MT formats. Since my car has the same Haldex and 6-speed transmission, I am very confident I will be able to re-code my car's transmission module in VCDS to swap a Mk7R 6MT in for the gears. Shit - 5MT Golf guys can code their cars to the 6-speed 4mo box which has the same ratios as the GTI, so it works totally kosher.

Since my car is AWD and I'm a 100% daily driver kinda guy with a lead foot and past issues with the law, I am not the type to want lots of power in the upper range of the power band, nor do I want gears that are too tall thus take me to too fast of speeds before Im in the power band.

So I’m going IS20 stock downpipe for that low to mid end torque, combined with a MK7 R’s gear ratios, an uprated clutch of course, and while I’m doing all that work I’m throwing an LSD in for good measure. Maybe in a few years when I hit the lottery or something I’ll be able to justify dropping the Powerzone rear haldex LSD in, but the part alone is 5K which is 20% the value of the car, a dubious value proposition for a daily driver. That is, if this car remains a daily driver. I am approaching 30 and would love to take driving classes and get to a. Track from time to time.

lengthen 6th?!?! What?!?! It’s already too tall!!!

Maybe you're misreading, or I wasn't clear about what I would change.

Shortening the entire range by taking out a significant amount of 1 & 2 would leave me wanting to lower the RPMs when cruising at 125km/h. If I were to significantly shorten the ratio of 1 & 2(which was my point), I'd end up cruising on the highway around 4k RPMs in 6th -- so yes, I would like to lengthen that gear in relevance to the rest of my changes so that I can cruise at 125km/h under 3k RPM AND have a closer ratio 1->5

IMHO 1st and 2nd are too short compared to 3rd, in terms of daily driving. 1st is so short it's useless for anything other than drag racing, and 3rd is so far above 2nd that you have to choose between winding 2nd out to 3-4000 rpm or being stuck at 1200 rpm in 3rd after the upshift. Let's be honest, this car doesn't sound good enough to want to be at 4000 rpm when puttering around town lol.

Edit: to clarify, this is based on a Mk7 DSG 6-spd

2nd is too tall. I don't want to have to shift into 1st at 8mph when in traffic. And would be nice to have better gearing for autocross. 3rd and 4th are too close together so then you bring 3rd down a little and leave 4-6 the same.

I think R gearing with a taller 6th would be fine
