How to retro-fit the traction control (ESC) button to a Mk7 Golf

@StorableComa You will want to make sure you have a 46 pin ABS module if you want to the TPMS set button. My Golf S has the 38 pin. It does support the ESC mode button, but not TPMS set.

To piggyback on what @golfdave mentioned about parking aid, parking assist and auto start/stop... In addition to some coding/adaptation work, adding driving modes also requires enabling the FEC and loading up driving profile data set into the gateway. Best to get with one of the remote retrofit folks if you want driving profiles. You can shoot me a PM if you want more info, it's pretty off topic for this thread.

Thanks for making that known again......I'd forgotten that!...😬 (idiot!)...

Thank you both. I'll double check the ABS module when I double check T17D and go from there.

Might just order the full set. Getting just the ESC button with blanks seems like it'd be more expensive than the Ali set with both sides.

Not too worried about driving profiles or any of that. Maybe I'll wire the buttons to something else.

Well I double checked. No pin 5 in T17D and I have 38 pin ABS. So no TPMS. I'll probably order just the ESC button in this case.

Since I have the 38 connector. I noticed someone mentioned pin 4 earlier. Is this 4 on the ABS harness or T17D? My T17 has lower pins 1-4 if I'm looking at this right, but all pins have wires connecting to them.

@Cuzoe Do You recall how you wired up the ESC button?

Think I found it. Erwin guides paid for themselves so many times over. Looks like the 38 pin connector is 4 for the ASR/ESP Button:

Shame we don't have a Signal RKA on the 38 pin for TPMS.

If bypassing T17D, is the repair wire connection the same for the pin on the ABS unit, or will I need a different terminal? Debating if I want to buy a harness for this, or just make my own with the repair wires. I have tap a fuse sitting around to use for the power. I assume I'd also have to add a ground wire since I'd be coming from all blanks and would need the 10 pin button connector (6R0 972 930)?

T10j/2 is for illumination correct? Since I have a manual handbrake, any idea where I could potentially tap for that? I suppose I could run something up to the Headlight switch.

My understanding. Pin 10 to power/tap a fuse SC34
Pin 9 to Pin 4 on ABS
Pin 1 ground.
Pin 2 - Illumination?

Only on my phone so can't look at drawings but yes that's what I remember, no RKA on our 38 pin ABS.

I bought the harness for shifter surround buttons. The colors didn't match the Erwin drawings but having all of the wires there was just easier. You can just stow any wiring you don't need over in the driver footwell. From there you can always use it for something else if you choose.

I have all six buttons, the auto start stop is being used to trigger a relay for a future project. And I have a 46-pin ABS in my garage. Originally bought it thinking I needed to swap it for ACC. Turns out I didn't have to so the TPMS set has just been stowed by the ABS connector ever since.

Did you have all blanks previously or did you have the existing 10 pin connector to the drivers side buttons?

I've got all blanks, so I'll either need a harness or to build it. Just curious what will need to be pinned on that end. 10 to power/sc34, 9 to ABS pin 4, 1 ground, 2 is? It goes to vehicle electrical control module in the wiring diagram. I get it isn't needed, but having dimming/lighting would be nice. 🤣

Edit: ordered an Ali harness and 5G1927137RWZU switch. 5G1927137R returned no results. Harness here:

So I've hit a bit of a wall with the switch. I attempted to order 5G1927137RWZU, as 5G1927137R returned no hits when searching. Order was just canceled saying the part isn't made anymore, this was from a local dealer mind you. Attempting to order from another site, but suppose I can order 5GG 927 137 E If I absolutely have to.

Anyone know what the current P/N is for just the ESP switch (no Mode or start/stop)?

I had all blanks, no plugs/wiring of any type. WZU is the right suffix for the switches (indicates color although I'm not aware of any color options), no problem there.

And either this thread or the one for TPMS Set @golfdave has all the part numbers. As far as I'm aware they are still current. I don't know the dealer network availability of them. eBay is good for them though. I just ordered a right side set of buttons without the TPMS set button for $25 shipped.

The plan was to install my subwoofer level control in that blank spot since I never switched to the 46 pin ABS to use the TPMS set button, even though I routed the wire over there already. With that plan in mind I finally ordered, and received, the direct TPMS system retrofit kit.

I never really had much interest in it because I like the simplicity of not having the sensors. On the other hand having the sensors isn't a big inconvenience for me since the weather here doesn't necessitate switching wheels and with a 2 mile commute I'm only replacing tires every 6 years or so. I'll never wear out a set.

But now that I've got my mind set on electronic parking brake retrofit I'm switching to the 46 pin and thinking I might keep the indirect TPMS and use the set button.

Thanks for the info. For your power, did you just use a add a fuse, or did you tap the wire at the back of SC34?

I know that I'm now wired to SC34. But I don't know if I had anything there to begin with. I did this at the same time I did several retrofits so I had the fuse box and lower part of that dash fully taken apart.

I added eight or nine things that needed power at the time so decided to just do it all the way instead of going with an add a fuse.

I think I’m in the same boat as you.

now I have this harness, but looks like it’s pinned different than what @golfdave says to have it. So I’m confused all around. I do have ESC/ASR coding off through the radio so I do have that going for me.

I have ASR off on the radio. Haven't coded ESC yet. I don't have drive mode or start/stop so I'll be leaving those alone. Ordered a button with all 3 just incase I'm unable to get one with just ESC off.

Looks like I've got a similar harness. Going to see if I can tap the shifter lights for illumination. I'll either tap something there or splice in a longer cable to either a pigtail fuse or an add a circuit for the 12v. Ground should be easy to find there.

As for the pin to the ABS, I'm going to see if any of the existing ends match. Otherwise I'll have to see if I can track down the connector.

Hello,

I had a similar harness. Yes, it’s pinned different than what @golfdave presents. I didn't use that harness. So I used the existing cable and just pulled a new wire from the ESC button pin 5 to the T17D connector.20201027_150049.jpg
My car initially had only the buttons in the picture.

Original harness.

Then I insulated the new wire with Tesa wiring harness.

Final product. The buttons are from China. Good quality.

Definitely into this mod (getting out of snow sucks going into the menu)
This all makes sense to me (nice work @golfdave!)...
Except tapping into Fuse 34. I'd love to see how folks are doing this in as non-destructive a way as possible. I don't currently have any buttons on the left or right of the shifter (2015 TDI Highline / SEL) but DO have the purple /green wire at pin 5 of the T17 and just want to make sure I'm not doing something stupid in getting power from fuse 34.

Im resurrecting the topic....
I have a question kinda related to the subject. Im trying to retrofit ESC button on a different VAG but the factory offers only 2 switches and none of them has all buttons.
The switch has an electric board with a chip carrier that has pins to connect with the 10pin plug (6R0972930).
Each available switch from VW has different pins on the electric board.
My question is....if possible to install more pins so I can retrofit the button from one switch to the other. An LED surely can be soldered. I believe those chip carriers are the same.
Sorry for the confusion. Im no expert.
