Hi,
I've recently completed retrofitting warning lights in the front door.
I bought a set of used lights from Passat: 3G0947411
I wasn’t too keen on modifying the pocket itself as it was afraid of a risk of breaking it or being visible inside the pocket.
So, I decided to modify the light approach. I started cutting the connector to make it short enough to prevent it from pressing the pocket. After a few iterations the light was fitting perfectly in the door card making no pressure on the pocket. But the housing was shortened so much that the plug no longer clipped in it. However that wasn't really an issue, as if it even was properly locked in the housing it would again stick too much.
So, the wires had to be soldered to the pins inside the light's housing and guided to the external connector (3B0972712). Disassembling the housing came out to be pretty simple. It’s made of two plastic parts: the white back with the connector, and the front semitransparent red and clear. There is small point where the back and front parts are glued together. It is pretty easy to cut it with a sharp, thin blade, and then simply detach these two parts clipped by small plastic notches.
Soldered wires:
And secured with a heat shrink tubing:
and the tesa tape:
I made the wiring long enough so I could possibly unplug the light without removing the door card. I attached the connector at the bottom of the door pocket with double sided tesa tape so it can be reached after removing the light.
I deliberately let the wiring to be slightly pressed to the pocket, to prevent it from moving to reduce the risk of breaking the soldering. Maybe it’s overkill

This way the door card is intact, only the light is modified and it fits in the door card.
