Hi all!
Who knows what is the correct p/n of insulated battery cover for H5 battery (242x175x190 mm)? Thanks in advance.

Humble Mechanic did a video on how to replace and do battery adaptation on our cars

Anyone noticed that he used "Binary AGM" instead of Fleece?
Any idea what are the differences?

After a lot of reading, the proper coding is Fleece. For reasons known only to VAG they call an AGM battery 'fleece'.

Anyway, today i replaced the 59Ah Varta EFB and i installed a Bosch AGM 70Ah S5A08.
I coded with VCDS:
1) capacity 70Ah
2) Manufacturer i typed UNK for unknown
3) the code written on the new battery
4) and finally technology FLEECE

He's not moved with the times..

I like many others thought it was "Binary AGM"..even Ross-tech didn't know when I first wrote this thread!!......Then in August 2021 I re-wrote the first post on this thread to include the following:-

According to various sources of information, including numerous car scans & threads on Ross-Tech, "Fleece" is for standard AGM batteries, "EFB" is for standard EFB batteries, & "Wet" is for standard lead acid batteries, as these settings are used at the factory. The setting of "Binary - AGM" is apparently for specialist "Bipolar AGM" batteries!

Giuseppe: Hi.

With absolutely no offense intended - VAG usage of the term "Fleece" ain't really so surprising - IMO, of course!

"AGM" refers to the Battery type and "Fleece" refers to the distinguishing feature of this battery type in its manufacturing process. "Fleece" refers to the weave of the glass mat in an AGM battery - from HERE

I'm most certainly NOT an apologist for VAG - but, as a marketing/sales descriptor that is used by battery sellers for the general buying public, "AGM" is likely more appropriate (i.e. it's probably a more recognizable word to the great-unwashed masses).

But as a descriptor for an adaptation channel setting inside a control module which VAG has designed to be accessible only to their engineers and to their trained master-techs, is it so surprising that VAG has used a "technical" term? Maybe not (again IMO, of course)? ;)
Don

PS: And yes, the normally brilliant Humble-Mechanic has gotten it wrong in this instance (he should revise his video). Binary AGM batteries are special high performance batteries that are seldom (if ever) used in cars. If you consider AGM batteries to be expensive, you will very likely not be able to afford a Binary AGM battery - if you can find one (they are impossible to source)!!

PPS: The "great-man" (not really -he's a God with feet of clay IMHO) at Ross-Tech recommends "Fleece" as the correct setting for AGM - read Uwe's response in post #5 of the thread HERE (note date 2020)

I haven't received yet my parcel. I will inform you soon.
Also what's the type of your battery? 70Ah?
I think both GLI and GTI uses the same EFB+ battery. My GTI is on OEM EFB+ that they replaced under warranty. Definitely not 70Ah.

From the first post, the only EFB batteries that VW fit to the MK7 Golf at factory are:-
59Ah/320A (DIN), H5 size, EFB type
69Ah/360A (DIN), H6 size, EFB type

I stand corrected. Dealer gave me EFB+ with 70Ah.

How's the quality? Do you think it's similar to OEM? I've bought some stuff from there before and while it looked and felt the same, it definitely wasn't the same.

Do you think it'll fit a MK7 Jetta GLI as well?
I have bought a number of textiles battery covers from aliexpress. All were advertised as fitment for VW and all had some Chinese VW logo on packing but not on the product itself (nor a part code). Still, quality is decent and comparable to genuine. Maybe the fixing stipes and holes were a bit thinner which potentially makes it vulnerable to worn if you plan to ofen remove the cover completely. Heat resistance is fine – still no deterioration or damage on Mk1 where engine bay temperatures are much higher compared to modern cars and there are neutral fluid leaks here and there. As for me, it worth the price around 15-20 USD.
