Resolved with help from the guys over on the Discord group. It was quite simple in the end, seems I had a corrupt MicroSD card and that's all.

Key takeaways
1. Ensure you have a good memory card. I borrowed one from my dashcam, but I think it wasn't geared for such heavy use and probably broke down quickly. Maybe better to use an SD card (and not MicroSD with adaptor like I did)
2. Use the original Duke and Congo activator file. There's a few modified versions out there.
3. No need to update your VIN or VCRN. The dummy VIN and VCRN will do the trick
4. Don't extract a the activator .7z file extension through Windows Explorer. Use 7zip instead.
5. MK7 community rocks!!

I can't seem to find a firmware download for "MSFT_US_VW_P0216D"

Finally managed to login here - website seems to go down intermittently - https://mibsolution.one/#/1/9/MST2 - DELPHI/Firmware/VW/US

Lists the following MST2 Delphi US files. None of these matches my software train exactly. Download in progress, then will try installing each one individually.

Once downloaded, I then update the addFECS.txt file to those listed in my headunit menu. Then follow the installation process.

I've also used VCDS to enable developer mode (green menu) even though somebody else mentioned this is unnecessary for Delphi units.
Tried using my own VIN and VCRN (obtained 10-character string through VCDS) but still no success.

Clicking AppConnect still requires Activation Key :-(

Have you actually tried to run the Duke and Congo files? It worked on mine which has a software train that is quite rare i.e. "MST2_US_VW_P0216D". Not listed on any of the documentation online.

Just make sure you
1. use a full size SD card (and not a MicroSD card with adapter).
2. use the original Duke and Congo files without making any changes. Just unzip straight to empty SD card.

But I think you first need to to activate the FEC codes menu by using VCDS or OBD11. There's plenty of Youtube tutorials to guide you on this.

But how i said, i get always, even its just a SW Update this -> Unknown Release Name

Change the language to English... Apparently is some sort of error , check if the files are in the root of the sd card (sd formated to fat32)

I installed Congo&Duke actvator - but it didn't remove CP.
So I found a patch in MIBSolution.

Please tell me which of those 2 file should I put on SD? Or both?
Is there any option to run this via script on SD card?

Just did this so its fresh in my mind. You only need the delphibin.ifs file from the patch files associated with your device train if using the putty route. the delphi.sh or *******.sh files are script files and are not needed when using Putty. I wouldn't bother with script upgrades as it seems like its a hit and miss and can cause reboot loops.

Hello Guys!

I read over everything above.
I just want a little confirmation.
So I have an eGolf from 2019.
I want enable Android auto.
My SW train is
MST2_EU_VW_P0890D

So I have to:
1. Prepare an SD card (FAT32??, any other settings?)
2. download the latest from here https://mega.nz/folder/J0QknTKQ#Goqv8h29q5BrxqS7wIbQ1Q
and unzip all to the SD card.
3. Insert SD card in to slot 1
4. Ignition ON
5. Press menu long, start the update, wait till the end with ignition (wont it turn off after a while?)
6. When it restarted 2 times and give me a question I press "cancle"
7. Igniton off-on
8. I am happy because I have android auto and everything work well too (am I by this way?? )
