How much little sense does it make? Replace OEM IS20 with newer version

Hear me out

The logical move when swapping out turbos on the GTI is going at least with the IS38.
However, in order to save money and possibly get better reliability, has anyone simply swapped out the IS20 to a newer version?

874 L seems to be among the most recent ones.

The difference in price is around 300-400$ (IS20 vs IS38). The difference is negligible. However, with the IS38, you have to add the software into the equation (700-900$).

Thoughts?

If you've already blown your IS20 and are looking to repair the car as inexpensively as possible, a like for like replacement makes sense, but otherwise, no. Labor cost is going to be the same either way too. Even if you're doing it yourself, it's a lot of trouble for no improvement. If you want to be reliable and faster, do the IS38 but tune it for golf R power levels instead of the 375-400hp.

OP has a 2016 which aren't known to be a problem. Besides, unless you're flash tuned you have a 5-year/60,000 mile warranty.

No car that has a turbo is immune to turbo failing. If it aint broke dont fix it comes to mind here. You are absolutely being paranoid.

Honestly I don't even get the reasoning behind buying a hybrid is20 let alone shelling out the mula for a new revision one....

Unfortunately yes. A couple people tried on the MK6. Their efforts are well documented on the mk6 forum
