Not sure if they've changed it(I've got a 15) but I have had hundreds of lbs. On it. Tile , sand, luggage etc. No issues. I also have the other mat over it.

If you drop the floor to where it actually sits right on top of the spare, you should be able to hold as much as the car can carry. All that weight will disperse evenly throughout the rear. If you leave it in the upper position, I would not test more than 200 or so lbs.

I have placed 10 50lb bags of asphalt patch back there with no issues (for you math wizards 500lbs). I also regularly transport servers which get pretty heavy and have had no issues other than some interesting handling.

how much are you thinking of? Just curious.....plywood or similar to distribute load I wouldn't worry....the #500 is getting up there though and prob more than VW suggests.

I’ve had probably 600-700 lbs of cement bags, tiles, mortar for tiles..no issues, it did look pretty lowered in the back.
I mean it’s a 5 passenger car, so it’s like driving with three fat asses in the back.

just looking at 6-8 50lb bags of landscape rocks 400-450 lbs 18 miles good roads.

Just to be sure, i got a piece of 3/4 plywood (not sheathing or strandboard) and made a duplicate of the OEM floor. It should hold up and take a lot of abuse. Also won't resonate because of sub in the wheel well.

Painted it black while listening to the Rolling Stones (uh ha)- looks pretty good.

distribute it through the passenger compartment & trunk

Agree with this wholeheartedly for safety reasons. The cargo capacity is just the gvw minus the curb weight (don't forget the driver is part of the car weight). But that assumes even distribution. If you put it all in the trunk and overload the rear tires load rating, you run the very real risk of overheating and blowing out a tire at speed.

When I rode bikes on the road it amazed me how bikers when preparing for a trip would load stuff on the luggage rack, behind the seat - and therefore behind the back wheel - almost piling stuff up to the sky but nothing in a petrol tank-top bag to distribute weight forward. Made handling interesting, though I've recently seen bikers with tank panniers / saddle bags.

But back on topic, recently saw a Youtube video where the guy showed when folding the rear seats if you raise the headrests, the seat backs fold a bit lower almost, but not not quite, creating a more flat loading area which isn't really present in a Golf....

2-3 80cu ft weld gas bottles, an intercooler and downpipe (FedEx is across from the weld supplier)

And that’s with the cargo tray in the upper position because I keep tools, first aid, ect below
