Hoon's DIYish Engine Build Thread

Back from BMW world to check on this lol.

I concur that Cyl 1 also looked the worst on mine when it failed. It without a doubt saw the most heat out of all 4 by a good 30 percent more. There were literal scorch marks from knock and heat where it had flaked parts of the piston top/top layer. Nothing seemed to ever touch the skirts and when I took plates out of the head Cyl 1 looked like it was getting least amount of fuel for some reason.

I don't know if this is an inherent design related thing of high abuse cars or what, or if a tiny nozzle of smalll shot of meth controlled to only come on in 5th gear WOT would possibly help with this. e85 didn't seem to stop mine from getting burned up as well.

Gary also broke the #1 hole.

A defect, bad injector or whatever can happen on any hole, but if everything is healthy #1 is definitely the one to watch IMO.

I respect your opinion on the matter.
I feel a little differently about them. Spent a lot of time around marine engines equipped with massive turbos and exhaust piping that all had blankets and wraps. Do they reach the temps that our little setups see at times? Maybe not, but I don’t know really. There are many high HP cars that utilize them and aren’t burning down all over the country.
Maintenance/Inspecting is everything when it comes to these things IMO.
I won’t deny that they could pose a risk but so could an oil leak onto a hot manifold.
I do plan to wrap and blanket my setup and maybe get a fire extinguisher hehe.

I think a fire extinguisher is a very underrated “mod” for us. It's small and it could make the difference between a small insurance claim and a total loss. If you’ve worked in the marine industry then you know how dangerous fire really is lol.

I keep a small one in my car & truck at all times. I always have a fire extinguisher, small medical kit and a pistol. Total weight of all of it is under 10lbs, worth it to me.

yeah, I swear a small fire extinguisher should come as required and included as part of any big fuel system build in the box. haha

I'm considering putting a one step colder spark plug on the #1 cylinder. You guys are scaring me. I wish there was some way to put 1* less timing or put a touch more fuel in that cylinder only.

This is my first car back to performance modding since the early 2000s I had an extinguisher back then in my sprayed DC2 Honda Integra Type R.
Adding this to the pandemic shopping list that’s ever growing.

I'm more likely to use the extinguisher on someone else's car than my own, but you never know. It wasn't expensive and fits well in the cubby on either side of the hatch.
