Does anyone know if there is a guide to replace the forward hood release cable? I just got a quote from my local VW shop and they want nearly 200 bucks to do it. Having trouble finding a guide for the job.

This is the part I'm trying to replace: 5G1-823-531-C

Thanks!

Did you manage to get it replaced?

FCP Euro did a video on how to open the bonnet with a broken latch

And in their description they mentioned "Stay tuned for an upcoming DIY where we'll actually install the hood release. For now, we just wanted to share how we actually got the hood open." but that video didn't happen haha

This is the closest possible guide as a reference

Hey I just did this replacement it was not that hard. You will need to remove the bolts on the hood latch I think m30 torx(?) You need to remove the headlight on the side where the release cable mounts (for ease of install). So once you unscreww the latch carefully lift it out, there are cables connected to it. Once it is loosely pulled out on the side with the cable there is a small plastic latch pinch it to release it the cable. Inside the hook portion you should be able to see the connection point. A pick will release it. One of the last things to release is the cable from its grooves in the radiator bracket, the pick makes quick work of it. Then pull the old cable from the latch area paying attention to where it gets caught up. Feed the new one in reverse and make sure to attach the cable to the latch prior to synching it back into place. Hope this helps someone.

Hi carbon_gecko.. could you explain how you removed the electrical pins on the left side of the latch mechanism? I couldn't seem to figure it out. Also, how do you open the cable release junction box? My issue ended up being the area where the cable is to "clip" into the latch mechanism. The plastic clip broke and as such wasnt seated properly and didnt provide enough tension to open the hood.
